p.1 #1 · Mount Problems!

I can't believe I just noticed this but...

When I mount my 80-200 2.8 on my D100 it rotates on the mount about 1/16" in either direction. It also moves about 1/64" up and down.

I never noticed it on my lighter lenses, but when I recently started to use the tripod collar instead of the camera tripod mount I could feel it.

All my lenses move to some lesser degree than my 80-200. My older manual lenses for my F3 mount tighter.

Is this going to be a problem? What amount is reasonable movement?

Thanks

there is play in some mounts and lenses, the mount my be close to tolerance being too loose but and the lens might be close to being too loose as well, combine that and they will feel loose , don't worry it isn't really a problem and just take the normal precaution , nothing more. Or sell you lens annd get a different one

Thanks so much, John. I feel much better. I never really notice any softness or other errors. But when I felt the wobble, I got worried. My 12-24 and 80-200 are super-sharp, but could they be sharper? I thought to myself.

Just relax, Craig.

Thanks,

Craig

hehe , yeah I know the feeling

seriously , sharpness would never really come into question unless there was a Big angular movement between the lens and the body

Is it normal to notice this only with large lenses? I just bought a Sigma 10-20 and I notice a slight angular movement (on the order of a mm or so) when I put on/pull off the lens hood.

The reason I ask is because I've never noticed this with wither my 50/1.8 or my 18-70 (kit)

Allen

FL has nothing to do with it . It is a function of machine tolerances between the mount and the lens itself

or you could consider it a built in tilt/shift

Seriously though, the most noticeable is my 80-200 AFS, it feels fairly loose (rotation) but makes no difference, I just treat it with a tad more care.
