Apparently Canon has started sending specs of their new camera to distributors and such. Here are the specs - checked for true. This of course means the D200 needs to really shine

Seeing this personally and only as a D70 owner looking to upgrade I want the following upgrades:

1st priority:
Bigger/better/brighter viewfinder
Alot better AF
MLU
More than 3 FPS and a larger buffer (around 12-20 shots at 5 FPS would do me good).
Some sort of weatherproofing (might be a bit too much to ask for?)

2nd priority
Higher resolution (10 or more megapixel)
Vertical grip

As for noise I wouldn't mind it to perform as the D70/D50 does now at high isos (meaning A LOT better than the d2x currently performs). I don't care much about iso 3200 perrformance, I just want a usable iso 1600 with a bit of noise that doesn't clog together like on the d2x and actually most canon cameras. I like the fine grain the d70 produces at iso 1600.

Once. For once, I would like Nikon to come out with a product better then Canon. Lets not do the ok lets wait and see what Canon does, now lets match it. Not one up them, but just match them a year or so later.

(speaking of the prosumer market).

It's going to happen Nikon has never failed in exceeding expectations on the release of a new camera. Forget the "better" part, that's an awful trap to fall into. The 1DSMKII is argueably "better" than the D2X, but the D2X goes toe to toe for $3000 less. It continually blows my wig with it's quality.

Have a little faith, the D200 is going to be worth waiting for, and, like most cameras already, will exceed the capability of most users.

Obviously Canon is in a big hurry to get it`s new products out this fall.
Nikon`s unprecedented record sales of the DX2, D70, D70s, and D50 plus lenses which heavily contributed to their quadrupling of profits have not gone unoticed. Leaking the D5 immediately after Nikon`s impressive profit report seems to support this.
Meanwhile Nikon just keeps plodding along doing their thing on their own timetable and as Jack wrote, "never failing to exceed our expectations".
Actually It`s really just a matter of which buying cycle you choose to be on.
Me? I`m into Nikon`s cycle

I'm going to swim against the tide and agree with j.curtis here. It would be nice to see a "top of the heap" product. One that's definitively better in every way than the competition.

Cheers,
Allen

Better in every way for you is not necessarily better in every way for everyone.
Depending on how you look at it you could say that the D70 topped the Drebel in almost every way and the the DX2 top the 1Ds at least at $3000.00 less .
To be honest , I`m not really interested in blanket statements that infer Nikon or Canon is better.
I just prefer Nikon ergonomics, their focus system, their flash system, and their lenses. I`m certain not all Canon users would agree with me.
John

And I`ll take them on their timetable, not Canon`s.
John

have you shot the d2x? better yet, have you printed files from the d2x and compared that to printed files from the d70? I have a hard time believing that you have. When you downsample the d2x file to the same size as a D70 file or uprez the D70 file to the D2x file size, the results may surprise you...If you're looking at the results at 100% on your monitor, you may have a point...i have shot the d2x with noise reduction off (to prevent the "clumping" you describe) at 1600 and gotten outstanding shots. You just need to know some tricks to process the files.

the reviewers that have done direct comparison between the X and the 1DsMKII have shown that for all intents and puropses the D2x is The camera right now , esp if PRICE comes into the equation. Sir please go rent one , your days of want will come to an end when you purchase one

whils the speculation in the nikon ball court for the d200 continues, the canon quarters are having their fun at a new 5d.

in any case, this sort of speculation, true or not, is fun and entertaining and keep hopes and dreams alive ... if it makes us all happy why not keep at it!

there is alway that secret squirrel quietly observing ... those who know little talk much, those who know much talk little (maybe no talk at all). hey but there is always another group - those who spread rumors to study the reactions of people to do market survey.

there is very little equavalnecy between what is going on with the mythical 5D and the uproar over the D200. The D100 is nearing 3.5 years old now and is in desperate need up upgrade, deeper buffer, faster DSP for Raw buffering, iTTL, etc all are "ancient" now. What is impending is the D200 , the name has been registered with the patent office. The trouble I have with the 5D is that Minolta already has a 5d , so I think all this lather in canon land is once again the pining for their beloved , holy grail of so called full frame

J

IMO , they are destined once again to be disillusioned that canon is not making the consumer cams 35mm sized in sensor dimensions , I have seen this lather now since the 10D

Does anyone think there may be a chance that we will see the next generation Labcast in the D200? Nikon seemed to say they went with the Sony chip in the D2X due to Labcast not being ready. They did not say eliminated.

I would not be surprised to see a body that introduces several advances. Some even above the D2X. Labcast could be on the list IMO.

I think it is a toss up between LBCAST and the Sony sensor , my bet is that Nikon did not spend all the money they invested in LBCAST for just one camera ie the D2h and D2HS

as for something above the D2x , well "if wishes were horses .........."

but a guy can dream

What's wrong with that? The D70 is made in Thailand. It's still Nikon and owned by the Japs. Unless of course you have other reasons.

Nikon still manufactures their higher end stuff in Japan. Some think that the Chinese are not putting out as high a quality. But then, as you say, there may be other reasons.
