p.1 #1 · D200

So, I hear the D200 wil be anounced in the next month and aparently it has something on/to it that no current pro DSLR has.
Any suggestions?
One I had heard was that it has dual card slots, one would assume CF and SD.
Cheers,
Jasin.

Isn't there some marketing rule about not introducing a product in late summer? Would like to see something new also but doubt it will happen before the fall.

Hi jasin,
No disrespect to you or your post intended and being that I don`t have a darn thing against SD cards and dual memory slots with one for SD but this IMO hardly qualifies as a feature to get excited about.
Please tell me there are more substantial features to look forward to.
You can even lie a bit if you want.

It wouldn't surprise me if Nikon makes the announcement soon. The venerable old D100 has been listed as "no longer available" in Canada, for about a month now.

Oh john believe me I am not excited and will not have one of these cameras.
I use D2x's and could never imagine a D200 whatever being the specs suitable for my work.
I agree it is hardly a feature to get excited about but were it dual SD CF slots I would certainly welcome that.
No disrespect taken and FYI I was just sharing some news that may remove our thread from the stagnant position it has been in of late.
Cheers,
Jasin.

If I remember well some Pro Canon body have dual memory card ability.
We can make a poll: what is your wish feature for the D200 body (but no jokes please...).

A pop up flash? Knowing Nikon, I wouldn't doubt it.

No that is a hasselblad feature.
I am sure that camera was designed by Homer!

betcha its a 10 pin remote built into the camera - so you don't have to buy a grip like the mb-d100. Maybe if they do bring out a grip for a D200 - the glue will actually stay on the rubber long enough? Wishful thinking?

My realistic hopes for the camera:

10 megapixels or more
cam1300 autofocus motor (I don't expect it will match the D2 series cam2000)
I-ttl flash

If it meets my expectations, I'm getting two. If not, I'll keep saving for the D2x.

I really dont think it wont be any more than 8MP.

The only thing that I would like to see it have is a metal body, no plastic, and 5 FPS. If it matched the specs on the 20D I might get one as a backup.

The D3 will be out soon too, it's basically going tobe a digital F6.

die digital F6 is already out. that is the D2X.
I do not thinkt there will be a D2X successor bevor 2007 or 2008. why ?

maybe the D3 will be Full Frame, but I am not sure if Nikon will jump on that
waggon.

The F6 borrowed tech and features from the D2 series cameras, and will probably be the last great film body.

The D2X is here for the long haul, it will be several years before it is 'replaced'.

The D200 will come in at a price point higher than the 20D, and will 'out-spec' it as well as out-perform it. It will be the camera that was worth waiting for.

Of course, this is must my .02 cents

Sounds good..

With Nikon having the target in sight (the 20D) and having longer turn around time..The d200 will have to hold its own for a while, you'd think that would be true.

I can't decide to buy it ASAP or wait a month and let gliches sort out.

Cheers

Nope, it seems lately all the grips have been coming off, I been repairing them like crazy, from F100 to several of the D series, Hasselblad and Mamiyas are most common. ....we could blame the global warming. If anyone has the grip problem, let me know I have the tape they use.

The big thing is don't wait. If it falls off it's easy to fix, NO CONTACT CEMENT ON DIGITALS PLEASE, the gaussing fumes are bad for the innards. Clean surface with alcohol, cover totally with tape and put rubber back.

For some reason we found if the grip stays off the camera it swells, seems to lose it's shape and absorbs moisture. Can't explain it but I believe the rubber being porous when allowed to de-shape it self goes bad.

Then it costs you 100 dollars instead of the postage and a beer if we ever meet up for the tape of which I have 300 feet of.

We are all speculating on something we do not know. I will add to those dreams!
The new camera, most probably, will have 8-10 megapixels, not a significant jump from 6. I also believe that the Cam 1300 is going to be there but the metallic body will not. I have nothing against the use of the dual memory cards and lets be realistic, the SD is usually faster than CF cards.
You can count on a 5 FPS firing rate and I hope it will accept old Nikkor lenses for metering, a bad habit on the D100 and D70.
If the new camera meets these expectations I will be in line to buy one otherwise I will continue to use my trusty D100.

I want:

  1. cheap
  2. all plastic
  3. light weight
  4. minimum 10 megapixels
  5. high eyepoint viewfinder
  6. excellent battery life

I already have a big, expensive, solid, heavy, fast camera in the D2X - what I want to compliment it is something I can take travelling or hiking and not be weighed down.

"Full frame" will soon be relegated to the dustbin of history, unless Canon is planning on redesigning their lens mount again. It's pretty much accepted now that their current lens line, particularly in the wide end, works poorly with full-frame sensors. They'll keep at least one camera model with the big sensor for a while, if only to save face.

In my opinion, the viewfinders are the biggest weakness of the amateur-grade cameras like the 20D and the D70s, and I would really be happy if some manufacturer (preferably Nikon, of course...) would address this problem.

Never...

Cheap and all plastic? YECH!! I think it will be mostly plastic but reinforced in all the right places. Won't be a pro body and, therefore, won't have that weight.

I agree 100% about the viewfinder though.

Why will it sell like crazy?

It'd be too expensive for general amateurs.

It would probably be overkill for press work

Rich amateurs and people who need resolution/depth of field would eat it up though, but that's a small market.

If Nikon made a full frame camera, it would be for the sake of having a super resolution flagship model.

Why assume it would be too expensive. They may have a new flagship model in the works with a full frame CMOS as we type. Rich amateurs are not a small market. It is just the type of feature that would sell like crazy and silence the Canon crowd for a few months.

Just to add some fun, one of my colleagues next door, a Canon freak, is already talking about the rumors of a Canon 30D, the supposed "D200-killer" to be put on the market in the coming months, or is the D200 a 30D-killer?
