The question I ask having considered buying a used D2H, meter fixed or not, what is Nikon's protocol for repairing this issue? They know full well it's a problem yet some they will repair without charge and others they will bill for. They must have some sort of internal guideline/protocol they would have issued.
Because I have considered buying a dead meter D2H and willing to pay for the repair I started thinking, what reason would Nikon have to charge for the repair on some and not others? Is there some reason they have for thinking there is another reason other than faulty materials as the cause? If this is the case, buying a dead meter D2H that has been assessed as a billable repair may have other problems associated with it and I would be rethinking my "good deal" buy.
I have contacted everyone I thought might have an answer or be able to confirm my line of thinking without a response as yet. Maybe I will just play it safe and buy a D2Hs.

Wonderful!! I'm right behind you Gary... by a few days.
Mine went out Monday... will be there Wednesday. Your statement gave me a little hope.
I just hope my letter persuades them to service mine at no charge too. I'll keep everyone posted as to what I find out.
lxdesign.... Then you probably know what John did to the mirror. I bought a 28-70 f/2.8 from John about a year and a half ago. Great lens.
Qranc.... I’m considering adding another D2H, and selling my D1h, but I think I will buy one that has already had the meter fixed.
Bill De.... It will probably be Friday before you can call them and get a service order number from them so you can follow the repair online. It took 4 working days for me to get one. I’m actually surprised how fast it’s happening considering the length of time many people seem to go thru.

Thanks John. I was elated to get the news. I just may have the camera back next week if it keeps going at this rate.
Yes, I know what he did - and she's got a new shutter... all good!
Working perfectly these days - if only the photographer could get the hang of her, we'll be in fine shape. I am still trying to figure out how to properly use my sb80 as fill flash in daylight - I get results all over the board, because it restricts shooting speed to 1/250. I need some help in this area.

Well Gary... playing the waiting game now.
UPS shows they received it on Wednesday... but no word as of Friday. I'll check the first of the week since you mentioned about 4 working days.
I've got some community events to go to soon... and those RAW D2X files are going to kill me. I may think about going to JPEGs for most of the stuff. You don't realize how nice those RAW H files are until you don't have them.
Mine went out and was back in 7 days. Meter fixed, lots of other stuff changed around, cleaned and adjusted. I couldn't be happier with Nikon on this one.
Although I do miss the days when I thought of my camera as a mechanical machine and not a portable circuit board...

Andrew,
Was your D2H still under warranty? If not, did you get any special consideration?
Oh... and yea... I know what you mean. I sometimes miss the film days... well... at least until I fire up Capture and Photoshop.
I haven't heard a word yet... so going to call them tomorrow... which will be one week and a day after they received it. I am thinking I should have received an e-mail by now... unless they are using snail mail.

Well... this "D2H meter failure" issue is turning into quite an adventure for me... and I've learned a few interesting things. I didn't realize how extensive the meter failure thing is.
I should know tomorrow how this story will end for me... after Nikon gets back to me.
I sent the camera to Nikon on July 28
I received it back August 9 (It was delivered to the office. I was on vacation)
That’s 12 days total. I have been gone on vacation, so just picked up the camera yesterday, but have not had the time to take it out of the box except to look and see if they replaced anything cosmetic. They did not. Here is a list of what they did.

My experience with Nikon was just fine. I’ve no complaints, and I don’t expect any problems when I mount a lens, and start shooting. It was frustrating to happen, but it’s all behind me now. I can’t remember ever hearing of any complaints of a meter function problem again from anyone who has had the meter problem fixed.
Let us know how it progresses for you. The time frame for my repair was much shorter than I expected.
Well... the reply I got today isn't looking good for me. I'm starting to get a little frustrated... but going to wait until I hear back yet again. Believe it or not... I actually talked to a Nikon phone tech that sort of... how should I put it... let it slip that they knew there was a problem with D2H meters... but now I can't get anyone to say anything (and the person who admitted it was probably sent to Iceland).
So far it is the............
"D2H meter failure problem?... what problem?... there is no problem... sorry about your luck"!!!
I'm playing my last card... trying to go up the latter a bit... either it works or it doesn't. I'll keep everyone posted as to what happens as soon as I know.
I'll tell you one thing... for those of you with a D2H that the meter hasn't died yet... start planning your strategy now... because it's going to happen. And those of you that want to buy one... better consider the cost of a new meter.
Sorry about the rant... just a little frustrated tonight.
Just a little update for anyone interested............
I just got word today that upon a second review (which I requested) my repair estimate has been changed from $375 plus tax and shipping to a "no charge" repair.
The e-mail I got explained that the review process for "D2H meter failures" is taking a little longer to verify. If I had to guess... this is possibly because they are getting so many complaints such as mine.
I am still a little frustrated at Nikons lack of owning up to a well-documented problem. But, I am satisfied that they decided in my favor after a second review (even though it took so long and I had to be somewhat persistent).
Here's to being persistent.
If anyone has any specific questions for me... just ask.
Good luck to those going through this or about to.
Woe is me. Why am I part of this club now? I bought mine from an FMer and he'd just sent it in for a checkup. They supposedly fixed the problem but lo and behold, my AF is flakey and the meter is useless. Are you guys using the normal service or NPS? I really hate to be w/o my body even though I can use my D70 in the interim, but I'm not a NPS member. Just curious if the turnaround times are based on NPS priority or regular Nikon service. Thx!
Ck my twins thread, My wife and I are planning on writing a powerful business letter to acompany my two "H's" Im hoping this will help all the people holding D2H's who will no doubt encounter meter problems.
