p.1 #1 · Sigma 10-20 Initial Tests and Sample Shots!!

Well, I was all ready to get my 10-20 after seeing that it was "in stock" at B&H last night and was more than a bit teed off when I double-check this morning and it's now listed as "out of stock"

Before I walk over, I call B&H to double-check. Yup. Out of stock. Damn.

However, all is not lost - there's Willoughbys down the street from me. I walk in and they have them in stock, but haven't updated their website.

Andy, my favorite salesman, gives me the 10-20 and a 10-22 for comparison before the purchase. I think I've financed his son's college ...

Initial thoughts:

Build quality - lovely EX finish, built like a tank, included petal hood. Doesn't have the cheap plasticky feel of the 10-22. Comes with a nice heavily padded leatherette case with urethane foam core. Works on my 300D and my D30

AF Speed - subjectively, no difference between the 10-20 and the 10-22. HSM is a *little* louder than USM - but that's about it.

Quality - superb. One of the reasons I wanted to get one of the early units was that the QA should be more stringent during the first run than later. Cynical, yes - accurate, unfortunately yes.

And the thing you've been waiting for ... sample shots! OK, these were quickies of my workroom taken at 10mm, 12mm, 14mm and 20mm. No touchup, all taken with a 580EX, no FEC and using a bounce flash from a white ceiling.

Sigma sample pix

Tomorrow, I'll be taking some outside shots ... keep posted!!

Those don't look bad, at all... Can't wait to see some real world samples. The build quality sounds like standard EX build, which is very good.

Glad to see someone get one. I too went to B&H to find they were out. Looking forward to more pics. Build sounds good. Darn...no Willoughbys in Tulsa.

It seems like I was one of the lucky ones who was able to get one from B&H. Mine is on a truck right now and hopefully will be here on Monday. I'll try to get some shots up ASAP.

OK - nothing spectacular - shots as I was walking to get my paper, coffee and bagel this morning. Everything shot at 10mm... no lens hood, no CPL.

Why don't they make an f/2.8 or at least an f/3.5-4.5 model like Canon? Or is the lens primarily targeted for Nikon and other brands? f/5.6 is too slow for many situations. The combination of an f/5.6 lens and the mediocre 20D viewfinder wouls make shiiting indoors an unpleasant chore.

EB-1,
At this kind of focal length, DOF is pretty deep.
My ultimate P&S for in-door party with a wideangle lens is;
Set f/8. Set the lens to manual focus. Use the DOF scale on the lens barrel. @ f/8, pretty much everything in front of you will be covered. Set the camera in manual mode. Shutter speed 1/200. Use the flash and let the ETTL do the job
Try it. It works better than it sounds.

Nah, Sir Thomas Crapper's invention has eliminated all the associated unpleasantness.

Because it's chuffing hard to make a fast, ultrawide, retro focus (a lens with a focal length smaller than the distance from lens to focal plane) zoom for the kind of money people are prepared to pay? The Canon is both more expensive and easier to build because it can use EF-S mount (shorter distance from lens to focal plane).

Steve,

You have a good point about the different back focus distance; I'd forgotten about that. The lens should also appeal to users of the 10D and even older obsolete bodies.

Considering all the quotes, there is little point in editing my unfortunate typo now.

I wonder is this Sigma 10-22 will be as sharp as some of the tokina 12-24 I have seen?

Do you get away with the F4-5.6 well?

There doesn't seem to be an ideal lens:

Canon 10-22: relatively fast but expensive
Sigma 10-20: wide but the slowest of the bunch
Tokina 12-24F4: not as wide, heavy but fast and usable at F4

Thanks for posting your impressions. I like what I hear about this new Sigma. The Tokina is also tempting.

One heck of a typo it was EB-1, I had to read it ten times trying to figure out what you were really trying to say.
