The lens is not discontinued, it is still in the catalogue. It is just a build on order item. The most precise figure I've seen was that somewhere between 80 - 90 of these lenses have been made...

Well, using this lens and a 2x converter on a 20D body (MF of course) would give you 3800mm equiv. Stack another 1.4x converter, and you're at 5400mm f/16...
I think that's something of a beast reserved for occasions like the pope of carefully crafted assasinations of a well known political leader.
You would need an anvil mounted to your tripod to stabilize that... how does 8000th of a second sound - for every shot!
I think an 800/4 IS would be more practical than the 1200/5.6.
Huh? Did you mean the 600 f/4

Flappie,
Last time I went to the Canon site the 1200 was no where to be found ... it used to be there.

Isn't this an $80,000 lens? The Canon rep in my area said he know Oakley owned one, and he only heard of two more being purchased. Was he yanking my chain, or is this price tag correct? He said $40,000 down, and Canon will start building the lens.
Jim Jannard, founder of Oakley has one, and as the poster above listed, has used it for drag racing photography (Oakley also sponsors a car, as well as Lance Armstrong).
Actually, Jim is a very accomplished individual whose career has spanned design, photography, product design, marketing, etc. He's an FM member, but hasn't posted in quite a long time. This 1200mm topic comes up every now and again, and Jim is usually mentioned almost each and every time.

I once attempted to shoot Jupiter at 1/30 sec with my Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800 DG) + 5.6x worth of stacked TCs for a focal length of 4525 mm, or 7240 mm equivalent AOV on my 20D:

I'm studying photography at TAFE Ultimo, and apparently at the end of each year a Canon rep comes in with a bunch of lenses we can look at and gives us all a free copy of Lens Works...
Anyway, I've been told that a few years ago (it might've been last year actually) he brought the 1200mm in....had it set up on 2 tripods looking out the window.
Funny thing is, when he set it up he didn't realise there was the open window to an apartment in the frame.....and after a short while somebody pointed out that they had a fantastic view of some old guy walking around his apartment in the nude!

I have had almost a similar experience with my 990f6.5 telescope (1500 Euros). One of the first problems with such focal lengths is to have a solid enough tripod. The long optical tube makes even very solid mounts vibrate, and the large magnification makes even small vibrations very prominent.
The second problem is finding your target - the field of view is so small that it is difficult to point the scope/lens to the right direction. That is why telescopes always have a small finder scope with a larger field of view (and smaller magnification).

I completed that course almost ten years ago, and I'm pretty sure I know the guy from Canon who does the demos. The 1200 makes it's way to the usual CPS-attended events (MotoGP at Phillip Island, F1 at Albert Park, Aus Open in Melbourne etc - not sure about Indy 300). One of the SMH photographers got some great shots at Kurnell of a bike jumping across the moon (aka ET) a few years back.

I used to have one, but mainly I do portraits and had to sell it because my cell phone bill got huge from the money I had to spend communicating with the model 2 miles away.
