Okay sorry for that snide remark about Canon Users "lurking". The more Canon folks that will switch to Nikon should bring the price of the SB-800 down to what the price of the old Vivitar 283s once were or maybe the 285. What fond memories.
D2Xs for all my Canon friends.
Must get along with others and not sound like an arrogant @$$
Each manufacturer isnt perfect....It's little give and take. Gear with regards to overall what you want......probably Nikon (sorry I am little bias, but then again this is the nikon forum). I got hooked on nikon gear at my wedding....one word...FLASH.
Hm... just spoke with a buddy who shoots for AP and his D2h is in for shutter repairs. And that the d2x he shot with has muddier, yellow colors out of camera. This guy is no rube, I'm sure it's more that he's just not used to it yet. Anyway he advises to forget going back--he's sick of Nikon's repairs and is just going to do the switch and adds that he still likes the images from the 1dII better.
About 90% of my 1dII images on my site are not levels/color tweaked in any way. However when i was shooting with the d1x i had to do some imaging on every single image. I'm not very particular at all, in fact, I think I'm relatively sloppy. I just like images juicey in tone and warm.
Any thoughts on this? Has Nikon's palette become less opaque, and boring, er "realistic"? I love how sharp the details seem on the d2x.
Take this to the Canon camp, or call me a traitor if you want, but the 1dII's images are soft.

I own both Nikon and Canon. Depending on the intended use, one has a slight edge over the other. (notice I said slight). I do agree that Nikon's iTTL flash system on the SB-800 gives me more consistent results.
Some of the biggest differences are in the little ergonomic things. Take one very basic example - lens caps. The new Nikon lens caps allow you to easily reach into a lens hood, squeeze the centrally located tabs and remove the cap. On the Canon - even on the "L" lens, the squeeze points are at the edge of the caps and it sometimes requires that you remove the hood to take the lens cap off. If you're a pro who frequently changes lenses, this is a tiny, but nice example of someone at Nikon engineering a better solution.
I could go on - Nikon's 2-button format VS: Canon's requirement that you format from the menu; setting custom WB, and so forth.
All these things add up.
Don't get me wrong, the 20D is a fine camera and it performs a tad better in low available light, which is why I bought it, but I just love the D2X - its one hell of a machine!!!
I think Nikon still has the edge for flash photography. My Canon flash and pro cameras (1vs, 1ds2) can't come close to the reproducibility and quality I had with my Nikon F4 or F5. One alternative is to look at a Metz and use it with auto mode; you'll have much more consistent results than with the Canon flashes.
I have a D100 and used it for over a year and a new Canon 20D ( 30 days old). I shoot Only people and events. No landscapes etc. Some may be a learning curve but I seem to have 99% of my images sharp in focus using the Nikon and around 95% with the Canon. Seems a bit harder to lock in for some reason. Not really a issue but hope it imporves. I could never use AUTO with my D100 and get the exposure I wanted. It was always a bit too dark. ( use a lot of natural light) and the Canon gets much closer.Always wondered if that was a manufacturing problem with my body? I still use "M" almost all the time. The Nikon seems sharper as I had my sharpness to normal or even lower with great results. With the Canon I have it one notch on the plus side.
The big difference that I see is the WB and skin tones. I would have to custom white balance to get the skin tone I wanted and then sometimes still have issues with it. The AUTO WB never did what I wanted( too blue or pink) and the other selections were hit and miss with natural light so I stay with the custom settings. More balanced tone with flash when in Auto WB. With the D20 Auto WB is perfect for skin tone almost all the time. I am amazed at the difference.I tried the custom WB but auto works so good I have not used it again. I shoot only RAW with both. The Nikon Flash is great. I used a SB600 and it was flawless. With the D20 I had to go cheap and use a Sigma to save money so I can't comment on that comparison. Both are great cameras. I am leaning more to the Canon only because I feel Nikon should have had a better sensor/color mode before releasing the D100. Heard it was improved in the D70 but that one factor made me want to shop around.
OK.. I have a 20D and with the 580ex flash it is perfect... The 550 was terrible!! The 580 with the 20D ettl2 is perfect.. PS what the heck are you doing in the "enemy camp" Canon is the way to go.. they have 5 years with the CMOS chip.. Nikon just found out about it!!! They were
into the CCD world.. Really great.. Lets not forget about the D100.. What a piesce of Crap!!!!
See you in the Canon Forun

piece of crap? oh my friend I beg to differ on so many levels I cannot even count them. the number of great images I captured in every convieveable genre is hard to beat and guess what I showed them here for the 2 years I shot that camera. take a peek at my website and please tell me which of all the nikons I have owned were shot with which camera. As for CCD vs CMOS, which of the 2 has a higher native noise floor? hmmmmmm, it isn't the sensor it is the philosophy of the company behind it, digic is the key to it and not the sensor, if you like that sorta thing and facts are such stubborn things aren't they?
Jesus, even I don't like a Canon troll There is nothing 'enemy' about this. We're all photogs (well, some of us pretend...), it's just a different weapon of choice. H&K, Glock, S&W, etc...all are good for killing

this David is what happens on every board on the net that has both canon and nikon shooters, without exception the canon boys for some reason (a very few of them indeed ) feel the need to do this nonsense. and funny they also cannot seem to take better pictures with their "superior" equipment

John,
I am so confused and I have no idea as to which side I am rooting for. I guess I just appreciate all fine engineers.
Look I am a Canon DSLR guy
a Zeiss Wide angle Lens with adapers
A Leica Macro and telephoto lens guy when I don't need speed
A Nikkor AV 200mm F2.0 and those fine Nikkor micro lens.

P.S. thought my friend who recently join the Nikon club gets lonely here thus I came over to join as well.

I of course love my nikon gear and nikkor lenses , but nearly all my buddies shoot canon and we have plenty of gripes between us all about our own gears , these newbies who think that "gear" defines the art of taking pictures are silly , I just love taking pictures and helping others take better pictures and of course help David get into the Nikon "flow"
Count me in! I just sold part (almost all) of My Canon gear and placed an order for a D2X! and a 60mm Micro Nikkor the 70-200 Vr's are in back order @ BH
But I just could'nt part with my Canon 20D MP-E65 and MT-24EX for those 5X macro shots!

there's always room for another convert , seriously I wish you good shooting
You guys all Rock! What I have learned is that as long as one is passionate about photography and keeps taking pictures he is going to get better, no matter if he uses Nikon or Canon. I must say I love the debate though. Everyone has a point to make and they are mostly good points. I am glad I got to stir it up a bit. I was in Mike's Camera and put the D2X in my hand today, all I can say is WOW, that is a beautiful piece of equip.
For those of you who are following this discussion I think I have made a decision:
Since I have been a Canon shooter for the last 6 years and never even considered owning a Nikon, (and I do believe that we are led down the perfect path at the perfect time, which means why would I be led to ask all these questions if not for a reason) I am going to get set up with a D70s with lens probably the 18-70 for starters, and the SB800, I need a backup for weddings anyway. I'll see how the results come out, and how I like shooting with Nikon, then after a little bit, it'll be that time... yes..... to make enough money to buy my first Pro camera, when that time comes whether it's Nikon or Canon, it'll be a special day. Cause the lense that'll go on that body will be a 70-200 either VR or IS, but one thing is for sure....there will be a big fat smile on my face.
Thanks to you all for playing, I have enjoyed all your messages, and have read every one of them. You are all awesome.
