p.1 #1 · Reversed lens info.

I will address the reversed lens technique, I will talk about the direct method. By attaching the lens direct you gain two things over the method of attaching it to another lens .

1. More DOF, Why? because you are not creating extension by putting it on another lens.

2. You have greater working distance, How much ? in the case of the 50 ?

When reversing a 50 , say on a 100mm lens or a 100-300 you have a lens surface to subject working distance of less than an inch.

However when attached direct to the camera that same 50 rev will have up to 4 inches of working distance.

These are some of the advantages of the direct method.

The disadvantages are , focus & fstop are manual. the camera will still meter. I shoot everything in AV mode. Image will be dark because you have to view and focus with the lens stopped down. most used f stops are f8-f16

Advantages of connecting the 50 to another lens is on your reg lens on the camera will function normally, meaning fstop, metering ,flash exposure . bright view finder, Why? Because you are shooting with the 50 wide open and the other lens fstop is controled as it normally would be. focus however is still manual.

The same lens on the 100-300 zoom will give you 3.2 to 9.6 times life size.

Disandvantages, No working distance and no DOF.

Here is what you have to do to use your canon for rev 50 .

Take the body cap and cut a hole in the center of it like the one pictured.

Next you want to take a ring of some sort be it a step up ring , uv filter ring without the glass in it or a rev , male to male adapter ring and glue it to the cap like the one pictured next to the lens.

Now that you have that done you can screw it to the lens .

I would suggest, gluing a 58mm ring to the cap, that way by using various other step up or down rings you can mount other lens as needed.

What kind of lens do you use ? any of the older manually focused lens with manually controled f stops. 55-50-35-28-24 are best . F1.4 or 1.8 or f2 ? doesn't really matter because you will be shooting at f8 min to f22 max.

On the older FL or FD canon lens you will need to put something on the backside of the lens to hold iris of the lens in the wide open stage, that way the fstop ring when turned will control the fstop. I used a small piece of a gardenhose washer.

I wih that I could agree that you have all the information. Those of us with FD canon lens are still struggling with the issue of the getting the lens to lock so that the fstop ring can be adjusted. I have tried several things and am still struggling with making it happen. It would appear as if the better choice for lens might have been a canon FL lens.

The FD and FL lens work the same way, the lever is just shaped differently. There may just be an issue with the lens that you have . There are others that use this setup, and don't have any problems.

For those of you that are suposedly still having problems look at the link below, on this page there is a picture of the back of an FD lens . the lever labled #1 or the Automatic / Manual - Aperature lever is the one that you must fix tight with what ever it takes to hold it back. hope this helps .

Look at this pic .

After you have moved the lever up and locked it turn the aluminum ring as if you were going to put the cap back on it or as if you were going to lock it on the cam body , this will allow the f stop ring to take control of the iris.

If you have the newest version of the FD lens , the ones that don't have the aluminum ring then you will have to retain the protective cap that's on the lens and cut a hole in the front of it to allow you to see the subject and allow the light to pass . there are three button that have to be pushed down for the f stop ring to function, the cap will do all of this , as if it was mounted on the camera.

Tom, Excellent info thanks for everything.

One quick question, the camera seems to meter ok with the lens stopped down both with and without flash, but I am curios as to how it knows you are stopped down. I get a 0 aperture reading on the camera body, but as I said it seems to meter just fine regardless of the aperture of the reversed lens.

Today I recieved my canon FD 50mm 1.4 lens. Now I only need to wait for the cheap uv filter that I orderd so I can use the ring of the filter to screw the lens to the camera.

Tom, may I add that if you buy ANY Tamron adaptall 2 mount lens, you can remove the mount and strip it down for a locking metal mount. I don't know about you but I feel better with metal locking mount than a loose plastic bodycap. I know this works with Nikon, not sure about Canon. Just try to find an adaptall 2 MF lens on ebay and you should be set. there is a NICE secure groove on the mount which lets you cement a 55mm or 58mm ring to it. I just feel better knowing my soon to be nikkor 28 2.8 won't wiggle loose and drop. Thanks again my friend for the nice advice.

one more question, sense you have both a 50 1.4 and 1.8, do you knotice ANY difference with the glass size difference? what I mean is there is more glass on the 1.4 compaired to the 1.8

Thanks,

Mitch

Thanks for the info Mitch , it will be very useful. I am working on something to solve the problem for people being able to find the parts that they need to do this . I actually made my cap lock so i don't have to worry about it turning.

Id like to see how you got it to lock. As soon as my busted 55mm filter arrives I can attach it to the mount and start shooting. I just bought a nikon-s 50mm 1.4 which seems to be pretty nice glass. Maybe I can locate a Ai conversion kit to mount it on my (some to have) D2H or D70. If you need any help getting lens' and such, PM me as our local camera store as NO idea about current internet value of items, aka I bought a 50mm 1.8 mk1 that was BEAUTIFUL shape. Out the door for under 50. They have Zeiss glass that is over a grand less that what it sells for here on B&S. I just don't have the upfront cash to take advantage of these deals. The lens I'm talking about is the Zeiss Macro Planner 100 2.8. They have it for around 600. Good guys.

Tom,

Thanks for all of the advice. Finally a good use for my 50mm FL. Just one question: how did you get the body cap to lock to the camera? I have the DRebel. Thanks!

You can take the same epoxy and fill part of the cap back with it then drill a hole where the pin on the body goes in.

Not the best pic but you'll get the idea.

Tom:
Does the reversed 28mm lens give the same working distance as the 50mm reversed (around 4 inches) ? Or does it give more working distance ?

Thanks Mitch, yes it's been around a while , works good on eos lens , the way i'm showing is for those newbies that may not have the money for the other set up , put old lens to good use , and just make this old time macro alternitive aware to the younger crowd.

No the 28 is around half of the 50 , the smaller the lens the closer you have to get.
