The D1x is an historically important camera that served the industry faithfully and reliably for years---while the D70 will be a mere blip on the Nikon scale in retrospect.
There's no argument the D1x is better than a D70 despite its age, just like a 1999 Ferrari performs better than a 2004 BMW 3 series. I don't believe the D70 will be a mere blip in Nikon's history. It is a watershed camera, 1 million of them sold last year alone according to Nikon, their best-selling camera EVER! Never before have 1 million people held a photographic instrument of that caliber before just 1 year after its introduction.
The D70 has become to Nikon as revolutionary and a watershed of a camera as the Brownie was to Kodak and the democratization of photography -- we wouldn't be where we are were it not for those shoebox cameras. There were better cars before and after the Ford Model T, but none of them is written about in 5th grade history books.
