I remember reading that there are only about 10 of the Canon 1200mm IS L lenses (around $80,000) in the world, and that 2 were owned by Sports Illustrated Magazine.
Well, this morning I saw news of people watching the Pope, and saw 3 of them within 5 feet of each other!
I just wonder who the journalists were. Life? World News? The Star?

It took me about 2 months of playing around with my 600L IS on a solid rest to get great photo's.
I doubt I would ever get a decent photo from a 1200L shooting from a helicopter!
I read somewhere that tabloid photographers really don't care that much about sharpness and clarity, because fuzzy pictures command higher prices. They actually deliberately shoot out of focus shots to get the desired fuzziness. Apparently, editors think that a shot must have been harder to get if it's fuzzy, and they'll pay more for it.

Have you seen how big this lens is? It is shipped in a create and It comes with its own tripod!
I saw some pics of it being used with one of those canon video cameras and they where getting a 7x crop factor using the EOS adaptor! The then put a 2x convertor on and doubled that number!!
You will never be able to hand hold the lens its Massive!
There is a guy from FM that owns one. He is also the founder of Oakley optics, Jim Jannard is his name I believe. He has a real impressive story about his creation of the oakley brand. He also takes some really nice images although I dont see him post much anymore.
The thing that really gets me going on that page is the last picture. The guy in the last picture is standing in front of a stack of maybe 8 500mm f/4 IS new in the box...wow...

Actually, this is not true. The reason why mst paparazzi photos are blurry or grainy is that they are cropped quite a bit. Blurry pictures don't sell for more, it's just that alot of the sellable pictures are blurry due to cropping/enlarging.
There is a GREAT photo book out/coming out, Paparazzi and Our Obsession with Celebrity, edited by Peter Howe. It gives a great inside look at paparazzi life and how they work. After reading the book, I have a better understanding of the "paparazzi" and what they do.

Some years ago, there was also a FM-member that owned one and had it in his signature. His FM-name was 'spieden' or something like that. I don't know if it's the same person you mention.
