No more File Browser. I'll gladly pay $150 to get rid of that piece of junk.

One would have to think that Adobe knows why so many would invest close to the price of PS itself in an app like C1. Let's hope they've got the whole workflow thing down with this upgrade!

Hmmn, maybe the new healing brush will have some use but I can 't see much else that would tempt the user who is already happy with C1 (or whatever other raw converter they use)

Still no doubt most of us will upgrade just to be "up there"!

I have a hunch they removed the html page because the announcement is dated 4/04/05 and maybe somebody goofed by putting it up early.

I actually thought it was an April Fools joke when I read it. $150 for a slight improvement in the healing brush? ACR 3.0 can now do non-destructive cropping? That's gotta be a joke?

Hmm... Doesn't look terribly compelling to me, but I guess we'll have to wait for more technical details before passing judgment.

No more File Browser

Did I miss something? Where did it say that the file browser would be eliminated?

Thanks, Jim

They changed the name of the File Browser to Adobe Bridge.

I was trying to make a joke when I said "No more File Browser".

Adobe Pushes the Boundaries of Digital Photography and Imaging with Debut of Photoshop CS2

New Vanishing Point Feature, Dramatic Camera Raw Workflow enhancements, Customizable Menus and Smart Objects Headline Milestone Photoshop Upgrade.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — April 4, 2005 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe® Photoshop® CS2, a major upgrade to the professional industry standard for digital image editing and creation. Available as a stand-alone software application or as a key component of Adobe Creative Suite® 2, also announced today (see separate press release), Photoshop CS2 software brings a new level of power, precision and control to the digital photography experience and to the overall creative process.

"Photoshop CS2 pushes the envelope with powerful features and simplified workflows that provide photographers and creative professionals the freedom to deliver stunning images," said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president of Digital Imaging and Digital Video Products at Adobe. "In light of the four million digital SLRs expected to ship this year, more photographers than ever will be making Photoshop CS2 their digital darkroom of choice."

Advanced Tools for Digital Photographers, Graphics and Video Professionals.

Photoshop CS2 integrates a new set of intuitive tools, including an enhanced Spot Healing Brush, for handling common photographic problems such as blemishes, red-eye, noise, blurring and lens distortion. Smart Objects allow users to scale and transform images and vector illustrations without losing image quality — as well as create linked duplicates of embedded graphics — so that a single edit updates across multiple iterations.

Responding to requests from film, broadcast and video professionals, Photoshop CS2 now allows non-destructive editing and the creation and editing of 32-Bit High Dynamic Range (HDR) images, ideal for 3D rendering and advanced compositing. FireWire Previews can also be viewed on a television monitor through a new direct export feature.

Photoshop CS2 users will test the limits of creativity with new tools like Vanishing Point and Image Warping. Vanishing Point cuts tedious graphic and photo retouching tasks by allowing users to clone, paint and transform image objects while retaining visual perspective. Reinventing workflows such as product packaging development, Image Warping makes it easy to fold, stretch, pull, twist and wrap an image into shape by selecting an on-demand preset or dragging custom control points.

Adobe Bridge and New Camera Raw Features Speed Imaging Workflows

With Photoshop CS2 software, finding and working with digital photos and images has never been easier. The popular File Browser has been upgraded to Adobe Bridge, which functions as a hub for productivity, imagery and creativity, providing multi-view file browsing and smooth cross-product integration across Adobe Creative Suite 2 software. Adobe Bridge also provides access to Adobe Stock Photos, a new stock photography service that offers users one-stop shopping — across five elite stock image providers — to deliver high-quality, royalty-free images for layout and design (see separate press release).

The new Camera Raw 3.0 workflow allows settings for multiple raw files to be simultaneously modified. In addition batch processing of raw files, to JPEG, TIFF, DNG or PSD formats, can now be done in the background without launching the main Photoshop executable. Integrated, non-destructive cropping and straightening controls allow raw files to be easily prepared for final output.

Simplifying Photoshop's rich interface, task-based menu presets make it easier to find the features needed for specific work. Users can create their own custom presets, highlighting favorite items and now have the ability to define event-based scripts and time-saving operations that execute automatically when triggered by actions, such as saving or printing a file. Multiple Layer Controls speeds editing, enabling the simultaneous selection and manipulation of numerous layers within a file.

Pricing and Availability

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Mac OS X version 10.2.8 through 10.3.8, Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or 2, will begin shipping in May to customers in the United States and Canada, and will be available through Adobe Authorized Resellers and the Adobe Store at www.adobe.com/store. International versions are expected to begin shipping in late May and early June. Adobe Photoshop CS2 will be available for an estimated street price of US$599 and licensed users of any previous version of Photoshop can upgrade for US$149.

For more detailed information about new features, upgrade policies and pricing, please visit: www.adobe.com/photoshop. Adobe Photoshop CS2 is also available as part of Adobe Creative Suite 2.

I'm not quite sure what to think about this. I do certainly hope that the Camera Raw is greatly imporved. Although I am still, and always will be learning to master CS, I have never had great results using Camera Raw.

It's a nice improvement overall.
The best thing is I'm allocating 3,072MB of RAM to it (used to be stuck at 2000MB) from a machine with 4.5GB RAM.

1. Layers take getting used to - the chain-link thingy is gone now. This will probably be the hardest thing for everyone to be comfortable with. It was for me. If you use a lot of layers, you're gonna love it or hate it. No gray areas on this one ... but give it a fair chance. You'll love it.

2. Assign/Convert color menu items are now under the 'Edit' menu.
3. Bridge is basically File Browser on Steroids.
4. Lots more nice features like Smart Objects if you use Illustrator vector artwork.

Nothing new in CS2 to justify an upgrade? How about:

Improvements to ACR including background processing and greater batch capabilities
High Dynamic Range capabilites built into software to make it easier to blend multiple exposure images
Lens correction and noise reduction tools
Smart sharpen
Improvements to blur tools
Red eye reduction tool (OK not necessarily the greatest addition)
The file browser now includes versioning and image rating to help better manage pictures.
Claims that it works faster, has a better user interface and can use more memory

If the batch capabilities in ACR prove to be up to snuff then it may prove to be a good incentive to switch from a combined C1/Photoshop workflow to a Photoshop only workflow which is worth the upgrade fee alone.

DiaAzul those are nice features to be added, but the question to a person like me with Creative Suite Premium 1.3 is whether or not it's worth the 400+ $'s to upgrade the damn thing when I just bought a major upgrade of v1.3 in January. Firthermore I'll add that Adobe does put some good features in Photoshop to compete with other third party products (I'm not going to deny the value in the ACR alone), but do most of these "new" features really play a solid, streamlined roll against outside sources like BreezeBrowser for sorting your files, or third party stitching programs, or maybe even third party programs that offer lens corrections features? I'll say that for me to have upgraded from Photoshop 7 to CS 1.3 was a huge jump and a good one is definately a solid yes, but from 1.3 to 2.0...well...

Besides, I just got off the phone with Adobe inquiring about a lower upgrade price since I just bought the v1.3 of CS premium in Jan and didn't actually get it until Feb. They denied the request since I didn't purchase it until March 5. Didn't make me too happy since I was told in Jan. that the 1.3 was a Major upgrade from 1.1 and there weren't any scheduled upgrade soon there after. The level one tech agreed with me wholeheartedly about my being upset over the whole matter, however since he is only level 1 he couldn't do much. Guess we'll see if Adobe gets enough complaints that they'll offer a better option to those of us who have owned the product for less than two full months.
