Adams spoke of "presence" ... in regard to trying to have an image convey things such as time, temperature, humidity, etc. (as though the viewer was actually "present" there). When you say atmosphere, it seems akin as a synonym in concept to presence.
To that point, I'd ask which / what attributes / elements of atmosphere are you desiring to convey (words first) ... the misty, moist conditions, the scattered canopy luminance, the cool / muggy feeling, the sound of soothing or rushing / roaring water. The tranquility of a quiet pool. I think the more "telephone game" one embraces of understanding what it is they are trying to convey to the viewer, the better one can discern the editing decisions / tools that align with the emotive response indicated by the "atmosphere" for which one is trying to convey. In some regard, it is possible to craft contradictory / incongruous edits if one doesn't define the direction of those goals for the image.
Imo, vague terminology leads to vague direction ... discrete terminology leads to discrete edits, which afford discrete direction.
Curious to hear your discrete thoughts for atmospheric direction(s) ... before proffering any suggestions. Also, curious to see raw / sooc.

Nice image, but I am totally mystified about the atmospheric qualities you want to enhance.
My first guess does not seem to fit. With images, atmospheric is often also called aerial perspective. That refers to changes due to the atmosphere which cause the appearance of objects to change as they recede into the background such as softening, decreased contrast and changes in color, typically a shift to more blue colors. These techniques create a feeling of depth which does not seem to apply to this image.
My next guess is that you are looking to achieve a more moody, muted, and hazy appearance. That is also going to be difficult with this image. There is a high, sharp contrast between the bright water and the dark background. That sharpness and contrast is part of what makes this image work. You are going to need to do some serious post processing to overcome those characteristic.
Can you be more specific about the direction you want to take this?...Show more →
Maybe ‘atmospheric quality’ was not a good choice of words. I wasn’t referring to atmospheric (aerial) perspective. What I meant was trying to evoke a mood, a sense of place, the feeling of being in a scene rather than just a simple documentation of a scene, (“presence” to quote Kent).
Firstly, by using a long exposure to impart a calm, dreamlike "atmosphere". Secondly, by enriching the deep greens of surrounding vegetation. Thirdly through the interplay of (bright) light, (dark) shadows, and tones. And finally, by adding some glowing to the final result (trying the new “Glow” PS tool) to add a gentle artificial mist around bright areas (water falling in particular) and to impart a dreamlike, ethereal “atmospheric” quality, to shift the image more to the emotional side.
