Interesting move. But too little too late. Is Nikon starting to realize it's not Canon and that the lens selection for Z mount, especially in modern zooms ranges is very limited? I'm still waiting for the Tamron 25-200 on Z mount.

I am sure they are.
The thypoch 24-50 2.8 also got launched in E mount and we were supposed to get it but the Z mount version disappeared. Wonder what's going on.

Too late for what? Nikon doesn’t have a 20-40 2.8. Nikon OEM offers a range from 14-800mm. Tamron offers a range for Nikon from 12-600. Nikon also has a 24-200. With VR. And a 28-400. Which no one else has. So your comments about lack of lenses are curious.

I'm reeallllyyyy interested in this lens actually. I only have the 28 and 40 for my Zf, occasionally want wider, rarely want more. This might fit the bill perfectly for me for a zoom, if I ever decide to get one.

This sector of focal lengths is a total mess on Z thanks to Tamron.
Nikon
14-24/2.8
14-30/4
17-28/2.8 (actually a Tamron)
Tamron
16-30/2.8
20-40/2.8
There's really no obvious choice of one over another unless you just have to have a focal length on one end or the other. The design language of this 20-40 look identical to the 16-30 which is one of my least favorite lenses on Z in terms of handling.

I personally really dislike the action of the zoom ring (not nearly stiff enough) and I loathe the exposed USB port. Past 24mm it is noticeably softer than the 16-24mm range. Overall, it just feels like a very cheap lens in my hands and I've not been particular impressed by the images it takes.

This lens intrigues me since its release.
Perfect zoom range for everyday/travel zoom.
Small, light, with overall very good optical quality and constant f/2.8 aperture.
And now for Nikon Z mount! Fantastic

Thank you Scott. I did tape the USB ports on my (new) Tamron lenses on day one. The zoom ring could be a smidge stiffer in my opinion; the old Canon 16-35mm IS that I replaced with this Tamron was pretty much perfect in this regard (though that may well be just me becoming used to it over the years). Still way better than my previous WA zoom, the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 II.
Not noticed any issues with sharpness on the long end yet, though. Maybe I will with further use.
I'd sure love to have the Sony 16-35mm GM II instead, but it's... well, not out of my budget per se, but slightly beyond the borders of what I was considering practical when buying the current bunch of lenses. If I had found a better deal on the used GM, I would've pounced on it, though. The only real hurdle was that while the Tamron is native for me, the GM would still have had to be adapted. Sure the Megadap adapter doesn't add any weight and bulk whatsoever, unlike the EF-NZ adapter I've been using with my Canon mount lenses, but reliability in the long run is an added question mark.
