Sorry for all the Great Gray Owl shot! I went out today and found 10 Hawk Owls and 3 Great Gray Owls. One of the Great Grays was a very placid bird that allowed very close, like 10 feet, approaches. I am not ecstatic about these, but I do like the close-up. Too bad that his pupils are uneven. All taken with the digital rebel and a Sigma 170 - 500, aperture at f5.6 with shutter speeds from 1/1600 to 1/4000, ISO 400. Thanks for looking.
I get such a kick from seeing these animals large as life.
I noticed that the pupil size differs in your GGO. As I recall, in people this is often not a good thing, since various head problems can cause that. Perhaps in owls the superior eye workings are just a little more independent.
Also, I love the great "kitty paw" feet the hawk owl is carrying. They're just so superbly feathered that even their feet have mufflers.
Great work Doug! I'm envious of your location.Great Grays come to Ohio about once every 50 years or so! Love the close-up, beautiful detail, and the full body shots are real nice too. Any more flight shots?
Thank you to all for your comments. I only got a few inflight shots of the Great Gray yesterday and they all were terrible. As you see even the Hawk Owl is not too sharp but I included it for variety. I will have to get busy in Photoshop and and change that fence post to a nice weathered tree stump!
