Not having $2,000 lying around I went to menards and bought a fluorescent fixture with a circular bulb and made my own. It is not very bright but the results were ok.
To give you an idea of how much light, or rather how little, the shot with the guy on the steps was ISO 1600 with the Canon 20D and the Canon 50mm 1.4 at f2.8. That shot is straight out of the camera (but resized and I added text).
NO...feel the whole Home Depot Bees and Ghetto Bees degrade the great product that Alien Bees are. This would be just another bad play on words. How about calling it the Ditzler Ring light instead

I bet I could power this by batteries with an inverter and a 12 volt lead acid battery. I have both here but I just haven't had time to hook that up. Once the fluorescent gets started it isn't very thirsty on power.
I think this would probably make a better macro light than for people but people is what I wanted it for.
I got plenty of DIY things for the new forum including...
- skateboard video dolly
- motorized dolly via electric garage door opener
- spot light bounce card via shiny metal dustpan
- RC shutter release for film camera from RC plane
- boom for lipstic cam made from carbon fiber golf club shafts
- and more if I gave it some more thought.
calumet rents them too and It is only $30/day for the profoto one. Bun then you need the pack too so you are up to $70 or so. I don't have that much room on my cc right now for the deposit though.
I'll wait until I get some room on my card or convince a client of mine to rent it for me and then play with them.
bc the light is mounted to the camera it is really fast to work with though. I like that.
thanks for the comment.
I got a shoot on sunday so I am going to play with it more then.
