Hello all,

I'm currently researching for a 28mm/F1.8 lens for my 10D. I want the 1.8 for indoor photography mostly. I noticed both canon and sigma have them. Most lenses I have are sigmas, and the EX ones I have (15/30F3.5/4.5 and 50F2.8) are quite OK for an occasional photographer like myself, but I find the 15/30 to be too slow in low light situations.

I've read the reviews section here on fm.com, but the sigma 28 only has a few reviews. On some other sites it rates significantly better than canon's version, while on others the canon one comes out slightly ahead.

Do any people here have the 28mm's from either sigma or canon, and can you post some sample images, or give me a link to them? Currently I'm inclined to order the sigma.

Any other recommendations I may have overlooked are of course also welcome.

Let me add an extra question then. I want to use the 28mm to get about the same FoV as a normal 35mm would have with a 50mm lens on it. What lenses do you all use as 'replacements' for the 50mm, considering the 1.6x crop factor of the 10D ?

Hey Emiel, I just got a Sigma 28mm yesterday. What kinda sample you do you want. will post by tomorrow. I played with it yesterday, focus is fast. Its not like the sigma 15-30mm which is f3.5 and hunts in low light. The 28mm is far better than that.

If you want something to be in the FOV of a 50 mm, the Canon 35 F/2 does a better job (I own it), but is very sensitive to flare which can be a royal pain in the butt.
On the other hand it's very sharp and light and the colors rendition is superb.
I don't know about the Sigma 28 EX, so I can't help you there.
If you want a 28~ mm lens the Tokina 17 mm Pro is the best bergain you can get though it's not as fast, since it's only the effectiv FOV that matters to you, the lens is still a 17 mm which means you can hand hold it down to 1/20-1/15 and I guess if you try hard enough maybe even to ~1/8-1/4

What I really want then would be a 31mm lens. The 35 is slightly narrower in fov than a 50mm would be, while the 28 is slightly wider. Choosing between these two I think I will enjoy the wider one just a little bit more.

@hithesh123: I would really appreciate you posting some samples. I'm interested in a picture with the lens wide open (indoors?), and one stopped down to a more usual value...

I have the sigma 20mm F1.8 and i think that their construction is fairly similar. I have no problems with my 20mm, although i try not to shoot it wide open unless i have to. Wide open it is not the sharpest, however when stopped down to F2.5/F2.8 it gets much better! Why don't i buy canons 20mmF2.8 then

Because the sigma is awesome because it has F1.8 if i really need it!

I have had no problems with sigma EX glass at all! So i vote for the sigma!

I own the Tokina 17mm f/3.5 and am very happy with it for the wide angle and landscapes I've shot with it so far. It's quite abit heavier than other lenses I've seen (this seems to be a bit of a trademark of Tokina, which based on their lenses must mean "tank" in Korean). That gives you roughly 27mm equivalent. Most people I've talked to really like the 35mm f/2 and it's on my short list after the 85mm and 100mm macro.

I've owned the 35/2, the 28/2.8 and the 28/1.8 on a 300D and was in doubt about which one to keep. FWIW here are my findings:

The 35/2 and the 28/2.8 are about as small and compact as an EF lens gets. The build is oldfashioned but good and they handle decently (except for lack og FTM and a tight AF/MF switch). The 35/2 is pretty sharp at f2 but it does have some CA. At 2.8 they are both very good (the 28 does vignette a bit however).

The 28/1.8 is much better mechanically having FTM, a broad focusing ring and superfast AF. Sharpness is mediocre at 1.8 and should only be used for lowlight or pictorial effects. At 2.8 sharpness is good though still a bit under the 2 above. At f4 I can't tell them apart.

So which one did I choose? - The 28/1.8, because it is much nicer to work with and it is more flexible in use. And also because I prefer the 45mm FOW than the 56mm FOW on the 35/2.

Didn't have any interesting subject. So I just took whatever was in front of me. Hope you find it useful.
Refering to your first post, this lens is way faster compared to the sigma 15-30mm. I used the 15-30mm for a couple of weeks. Its a fine lens for outdoors but indoor it just hunts. With the 28mm there is no hunting, focus is fast. Get the Sigma, you won't regret it.
