We are both on the same dilemma...the 2.8 speed which is where I normally draw the line for my slowest lenses vs the added range of a 12mm...plus that way I got a 12-24mm, a 35mm 1.4L ii, then my other lenses..
I am pretty happy with my results from Yellowstone with the Tamron 15-30mm 2.8 and a polarizer though so maybe I dont really NEED to change. Still..that is one more point against the 12-24mm..I wished several times that my Tamron could use regular filters during my trip.
Decisions decisions...

Yes this lens for me would be a landscape lens and filters are very important part of my landscape images. That's a huge knock on the 12-24...no matter how good the image quality is.

Most impressive lens form Sony to date imo.

Apps are limited and I'm not the biggest user of them. Actually I don't have any on my cameras. Old school but if you did get this lens you will have to turn to apps. I am interested though in the smooth reflections app.

For me it's a polarizer which no app can help with. Shooting waterfalls or rain forests the polarizer is indispensable.

Yep that is exactly the only filters I buy..polarizers and carrying that 150x150mm was a bit of a pain, taking it on and off as we drove around. The results though were awesome IMO .
The ND filters I have are just for my wife;s camera so she can do video basically.

Where are all the photos with these two new lenses? Aren't they out already?

We never like them anyway though.

But you seem to be right as very little out there.

Roger,
It would be great to have the popular Voigtlander 12/5.6 (E-mount) compared to the new FE 12-24/4 in the optical bench. This may be too late.

Be interesting to see how the 12-24 compares to the 16-35 f4 from 16 to 24 where the 16-35 is very good. If it's comparable, I might have to sell my 16-35 and pick up the 12-24.

I think I said the same thing in a different thread...

I would love to see this comparison, but also add in the 16-35 GM as well just so we are covering all the lenses in that range that Sony makes.

I still see the permanent hood as a significant drawback for the 12-24, but if it is as good as it seems, it may make for a very difficult decision.

Tipping point for me. I have the 12 in my bag now. If the zoom is better I would not mind having it over the 12 mm . Neither one can take filters anyway

Fred, I've gave up testing Voigts some time back, although I never tried the 12mm. For the ones I did try, I never found 10 copies that were reasonably centered on most of the ones I did try. A good Voigt can be really good, an average Voigt is average, and there's not any optical adjustments: what you get is what you got.

I gave up on the CV 15/4.5 III but surprisingly their newer 10mm and 12mm seem to have low variability. I tested three 12mm and they were all well centered.

I would give the CV 12/5.6 III E-mount a chance. If you want, I can send my well centered copy over to your lab.

My 12/5.6 is sharp to the edges but if the new 12-24/4 is noticeably better, I may also switch. My eyes are on the new 16-35/2.8GM though.

not completely true. there's a filter maker by the name of Bombo that does make filters for the CV 12, and I'm positive that it works (100mm x100mm filters). I have the CV 10 setup to work with filters. Biggest issue is that the extreme angles tend to make vignetting really bad due to geometry.

Unfortunately, I contacted them regarding the FE 12-24, and the filter system will be 150x150mm filters, dealbreaker for me as I'm trying to keep my kit small.

I didn't know that existed. It's called Zorro100.

it's a pretty neat system, I switched over from LEE to bombo. The CV 10 requires a super precise filter to even work, it's hard to explain, however due to the fact the holder is stainless steel, it can be made MUCH thinner than LEE, and the approach is a bit different, it's built very close in tolerance so you cant use gaskets. Hasnt been an issue for me with my limited use.

The zorro looks to be their newest model, however, I have the laser 100 and it works the same. I bought it before the zorro came out, zorro looks better made, and more precise with the carbon fiber? BTW, zorro looks like the cost of JUST the holder, I recall holder + adapter ring cost me around 175 or so.

Their normal adapter rings are like $7 a pop, so I simply got all sizes, and two of some sizes. Their normal holder is also very inexpensive, like 20-30 or so. They just slide and snap in place, I really like the style, makes for a really compact design.

LR has got some in stock. I got so disgusted with them I just stopped looking but that was a couple of years ago, and then with the disaster they are to repair, I just gave up on looking at them. I'll take another look. And since I promised to have the post up today but won't (major software revolt), here at least is the 12mm end. It's pretty impressive.

That's a good looking wide end. Look forward to hearing about variability. Thanks for saving me from refreshing LRB all night! Will start again tomorrow.

Indeed very impressive at 12mm. Perhaps the best 12mm currently in the market? Just for reference, here is a comparison between the Sigma and Canon posted at LR. The Sony seems to be flat field without much astigmatism while maintaining high resolution and contrast.
