I'd love to see more of this, also increasing the depth of the grip as well as the height. Sony seem intent on pushing their mirrorless small camera body advantage, even in markets where people don't want this.
Still it's much easier to mod your A9 to be bigger and heavier than it is to mod your 1DX to be smaller and lighter!

I will probably buy one to attempt to copy it in aluminum and add a ArcaSwiss dovetail. I felt like I was on the right track a few years ago producing the "PalmGrip" for NEX but had a difficult to deal with machine shop and the Chinese made grips appearing in mass.
Having just returned from a trip using the a7RII at length, I thought of trying to draw a design in SolidWorks similar to this with a dovetail and a wedge design that would still allow it to lay on a flat surface.
My camera has only one hole in the base. I see two pins in the Sony product. Maybe one retracts depending on the camera model.
Anyway, its good to see some of us are thinking about it besides me, Sony, twoeye. and others.

I'd hit it, at $30 or so at least =). With the large lenses I have I put the camera down grip facing up a lot of the time anyway. I actually find it easier to pick up and balances the lens + hood better with some lenses than laying it upright.

Lucky me, i have a small hand so for me
"Neewer Quick Release L-Plate for Sony Alpha A7 II" with the side part removed already give me sufficient added grip.
It cost under 10$ on Ebay, providing easy access to battery, have arca-swiss compatible rail.
But good luck on your DIY deeper grip. I like to see cool stuff.

Like most accessories, some will find it useful.
From my standpoint, I don't know why Sony does not incorporate an Arca compatible mount into the baseplate on the camera body (or on the 70-200 lens foot). Would not add too much size or weight and would actually decrease size and weight compared to adding an external plate. I wish an Arca L-bracket was integrated into the body design.

I think the GP-X1EM grip makes sense, but the price does not, so I decided to make one myself instead of waiting for the eBay-clones to arrive. Work is in progress. 4mm MDF is cut, laminated and sanded to desired shape, it will be painted black and part of it covered in leather.
I think it works great and believe it will be a pretty useful optional accessory. Added weight and bulk is very small, handling of the camera is much better. Cost is close to zero.

Uhm, no. IMHO, overpriced and lacks access to the battery. I love my RRS plate, it has a battery door access, arca-swiss design to attach to both my Money Maker strap and TVC-33 and it's $50 cheaper. Adds just a little extra for the grip and fits perfectly with no twisting and it sits flat!

After reading this thread and doing some extensive research, I decided on this one from JB Camera, finally one that give my pinky and place to rest, love it

I'm using my grip extension and really like it. But I did go ahead and order the RRS base plate as well to test. On the off chance that I ever want to mount onto a tripod as well as placing the camera down on a counter it won't be wobbling back and forth.

I love my grip. I tried A9 yesterday with out it and my pinky finger has no place to go. I could put under the cam which was not to bad but the grip just makes it.

I also like the Sony Grip Extension, with the one caveat that it is lacking a Arca-Swiss compatible dovetail.
This piece has the dovetail and the Sony grip is set into it and secured with a longer captive screw. The assembly can be partially unscrewed to access the battery, just like the original. It also sits flat on a table with lens, albeit at an angle. Shown in bare aluminum before black paint or anodizing.
