p.1 #1 · Iceland Summer 2016 with A7RII and Zeiss lenses

In August 2016 I went for the sixth time to Iceland. Due to a lot of work at my main job it took about half a year longer to process and select all the images than usually. But finally I’m finished and able to share the result with you.

Besides that I really love this island my main reason for another trip to Iceland was my long-term project of making a coffee table book of Iceland. I was still missing some good images of some of the remote highland areas.

You can find the complete itinerary of this trip, a time-lapse video, additional images and infos how Iceland has changed over the years on my blog:
https://wild-places.com/2017/04/14/iceland-sixth-times-a-charm/

I used the following equipment on this trip:
- 2 A7RII bodies
- Zeiss Batis 18mm
- Zeiss Loxia 21mm
- Zeiss Loxia 35mm
- Zeiss Loxia 50mm
- Leica APO-Telyt-M 135mm
- LowePro Dryzone 100 backpack
- Gitzo tripod with Acratech ballhead
- B+W ND filters and polfilter
- Ricoh GR
- some rain covers and an umbrella

The Sony bodies worked flawlessly, even in the sometimes extremely wet conditions.

C&C welcome and it would be great if you could tell me the numbers of your favorite images.

And if you have any questions about Iceland don’t hesitate to ask them here in this thread.

Very nice set Boris

Favorite are Haifoss shots and Axlarfoss ( wonderful place ) and really like the Hafrahvammagljufur Canyon shot
Going to Iceland again Sep 20 this year and looking forward to Aldeyjarfoss and Haifoss
and going with new gear as A7r ii and Loxia 21 and 50

Is the last shot a pano of Vestrahorn with Loxia21 ? (saw that you updated info)

Boris,

These are fantastic! Moody atmosphere with pops of color. Compositions and exposures are excellent.

A place on my bucket list for sure!

Great landscape photos Boris. I am jealous you have been to Iceland six times. I've been there once myself and would love to go back and explore more of the island. It is a photographers paradise!

Gorgeous images, Boris. As I was looking through the images and before I had read your post, I had the thought to tell you that these were truly book-worthy! I have been looking through photo books of Iceland recently, and I think yours are the most striking and original that I have seen. Your images often seem to involve some slight transformation of the scene.

As someone who still has a lot to learn about photography, I would love to hear more about how some of the images came to be made--more than simply the equipment and exif, useful though that information is.I would be very interested to know how you worked and how your favorite or most unusual images were made.

I will let you know which are my favorites, but I need to look more for a while--there are so many great images! For starters, i would pick 2, 6, and 7. I looked at your link and there are many great photos there also.

I am also impressed that you fit this in with family travels--not an easy thing to do!

Congratulations on the images. Beautiful work.

Great,as in great and very good!
My favourite is the second from the top (Litlanesfoss) which is fascinating. Then you have the coulorful stuff further down when scrolling as well... here I like the image from Landmannalaugar (#39).

Thank you for all the images!

Amazing stuff Boris! Really well done, congrats!

I still have pretty much all the photos from Summer 2016 and January 2017 to select and edit I am so bad at that... Plus Lofoten in August 2016 is the same (and I am going there again in June). I really need to get that going...

Great series Boris.

It does seem to me that you've hit the shadows/blacks pretty hard on a lot of these images. Not sure if that was intended as I don't recall this from other images you've posted.

Out of many great shots these are my favorites; 2,7,9,14,15,26,31,35,56

Thanks a lot for your kind words. I'm happy to answer any questions about my images but at the moment I'm not 100% sure in which aspects you are most interested. How to choose the right location and/or right time? How to compose the image? Or how to post process to image?

It would probably be useful to ask some more specific questions and also tell me the # of the images you want to know more about.

But nevertheless I'll start with some additional background information about a few of the above images:

#2: The most important thing was to find out how to get to this viewpoint. The following image shows from were #2 was shot:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2846/34010645316_ae14ba3c96_o.jpg

The hicking trail is on the left side of the river. In order to get there you have to cross the river and then climb a couple of meters down into canyon. For an even better viewpoint you would need climbing gear and a rope (which I would probably bring next time).

#7: I did the hike twice to Viti on the same day. Late afternoon there was a nice light but too many people. Directly at sunset it was very cloudy and raining. Nevertheless I took my chance and went a second time up to the crater lake. I was alone there and suddenly I got a colorful sky.

#50: Nearly everbody shoots the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon from above (which I also did). But in addition I put on my wading trousers and walked inside the canyon to get a different perspective.

#52 and #53: Both images were shot during a heavy rainfall using an umbrella. In this moment I was alone even at the iconic Svartifoss.

#9, #11, #12, #27, #56: I've been to all these places on about ten different days (although not on this single trip), always hoping for some spectacular and different conditions. It makes sense to return to really interesting places.

Short summary: a little bit of extra effort often pays off

Boris
