Please feel free to post these two images anywhere you want to post about this. The more exposure to this the faster the fix. Its hard to see the exact detail of the friction in the photos but I can clearly see it, no question about it.

Just some shots unedited at this point but just to show the backgrounds this is pretty nice looking. I did use a Nissin flash for fill off camera. And yes that will be my 2nd Grandson. Davis Guy Kingston. I do get the honor of my name with him. Pretty cool stuff

Thats a very busy background here in the desert and it always looks very nervous with bokeh so its good to see a lens get over that.

It's so smooth, almost looks like a backdrop!

Yea it does Mike. Well we know the lens has the mojo, now give me gears that don't leave metal flakes in my lens. Here we go again. Seriously folks this is getting tiring. I won't complain though, its part of the business and I rarely whine about this stuff. I just wish I knew someone at Sony as no question I would be in their ear. These Artisans need to be proactive with this shit or get rid of them. They are not helping Sony here. There I said it, something I have been holding back on.

I need more espresso.

I can't imagine that this is a design problem. They would have had many months to discover and correct this. I had my order in for this lens and then got cold feet based on the issues with the 35mm f/1.4. I sure hope that it is simply one early run where something was amiss, but let's say that Sony rectifies the problem, they need to come clean and be clear as to what was going on and what the fix was. Otherwise, I would never buy such a lens for fear that the fix was temporary and the problem really was a design issue and not just a one up manufacturing issue.

Greetings! Just took delivery of the 85mm, and I am having the same issues as described and posted above. On AF-C, can't lock focus, and the lens just goes nuts back and forth, with the described noise.

Guy: Thank you very much for your post here and on the 24-70mm. Much appreciated!

Thanks Fred this lens has the mojo for sure. My copy of it though I can really see the grinding on the threads. My dealer just emailed me and they are sending this up the food chain. If you have any connections please do the same. I will wait till they have stock to do a exchange. If folks have this issue than send a clear message for a exchange. Use those images if you need to.

Damn, what a crying shame with that focus issue. Hopefully it is just a bad batch, because if they have to retool their machines it might take a while until it is fixed and production can resume.

Agree . Has anyone have one without this issue. Love to hear from you and your thoughts on AF speed. Clearly with this grinding it has to be affecting the AF speed and burning battery as well.anything that takes more force to operate needs more power and slows down the process. Here it's battery and AF. That seems logical to me.

Is yours as loud as the one I posted in my video? There is no way this could be acceptable as you really couldn't use it in a quiet environment... and this is a flagship prime lens aimed at professionals.

These GM lenses are designed for multi-media usage, hence that de-clickable aperture ring. Any noise isn't acceptable where in-camera audio recording is concerned.

I just did some tests at infinity and the FE 85/1.4GM is incredible to the very corners at f/1.4!

I will post the crops shortly.

Do not consider contrast/color since it's overcast here in San Clemente...

There is a definite problem here! Even my 85L II with MB IV focuses a lot quicker even in low light.

I loved the 85L for stills on the old 5D's, but coming over to Sony for multi-media (video and stills) figured it was basically a no-go because of the noisy focussing mechanism, you could hear the elements rattle during focus on the internal audio, even with a mounted shotgun mic. This doesn't sound usable for run & gun video either....... ~Chris

Great thanks Fred. That would complete our mid and infinity tests on this lens.

Btw has anyone tried it on a different model cam. I'm picking up a A6300 today and will try it but nice to know if it still does it to cut that variable out

Be interested in your thoughts about the A6300 as a B stills cam given your shooting requirements and lens selection. Especially interested how you like the aesthetics <50.

Keep the reports coming folks as I want this thread to be elevated to the Sony level and get this focusing issue corrected. Also I need mine replaced immediately and low stock is not helping the cause.

Here it go:
WARNING: Files too big. Had to split in 2. Wait until it loads.

f/1.4, f/1.6, f/1.7, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/13 (Infinity distance)

I uploaded from f/1.4 until f/2 in thirds because I see a difference in the center.

Looks great Fred. Case closed damn good freaking lens. Lol

Honestly the Batis 85 can't do this out in the corners. Looks like my mid level nails it at 2.8 and very acceptable faster. That's just flat out outstanding
