Picked up the D500 kit (which includes the excellent 16-80mm f/2.8-4 VR lens) from my local dealer this evening. The battery was close to dead, and I was hungry, so I stopped at a nearby Thai restaurant, where they were kind enough to allow me to charge the battery while I ate dinner. Towards the end of the meal, with a partially charged battery, I was able to play with the camera and take some shots inside the restaurant (dimly lit), as well as take a few shots outside (where it was completely dark except for whatever lighting came from signs and street lamps.
All of the following are shot at ISO 6400. Most have -1/3 or -2/3 stops of exposure compensation dialed in, so as not to have the images be artificially bright. One of the things I noticed immediately - white balance is outstanding, probably the most accurate under tricky conditions that I have ever seen. Noise at ISO 6400 is really well-controlled, and in areas where it is present, it's of a pleasing grainy form, not color blotches like some other cameras. Lighting was terrible, a significant challenge, but the camera seemed to handle it smoothly. My initial impressions are very positive. Also - the body is well-built and comfortable. Great viewfinder. Deep and comfortable grip. Fast and accurate AF. Looking forward to getting out and really shooting with the camera, and not just test shots in a restaurant....Show more →
Where did you get yours from? I got mine from District Camera. Was there from about 4:30 to 5:30pm
A B&H rep on one of the other forums stated that only NPS members would get them that first day. I guess they got more in than they thought they would.
I guess it's better for B&H to predict that none would be available until later and then come up with them, than to promise them and not be able to deliver.

Just a heads up if you have Wasabi battery. The D500 will not work with the Wasabi Power Li-ion battery. This battery works perfectly on my D800E, but the D500 think it is drained.
I can confirm this, same with the Power2000 battery I got as a spare. They work just fine in my D810, looks like I will mark the 3rd party as D810 only. I had seen a report on another forum that the Nikon batteries marked Li-01 would not work, this is not the case as that one works fine in my D500. Still need to charge the new one.
For anyone still looking for D500, Adorama might have some. I ordered late yesterday and got a call they will ship today. At the same time, I bought one here so got them to cancel it this morning.
I got some great pics of a Great Blue Heron at dusk last night but I'm an idiot and did not enable RAW shooting in time. But I am very impressed with the SOOC high ISO JPEG quality, shooting wildlife 5000-12800ISO does not seem like it will be an issue for this camera. Seems like a perfect match for my 200-400mm f4G VR1. Testing with my 200-500 today!
Has anyone tested auto AF fine tune yet? I'll be attempting this afternoon as well.

That's interesting! I had no idea the D500 has auto-AF Fine Tune. What a great idea, assuming it's implemented well. I guess I should go read the manual, eh?

Please post some photos when you have a moment! How did you find the AF track and AF lock while shooting continuous?

Will do! Work was much busier than expected today so hoping to post later tonight or tomorrow when I have a moment on my photo workstation.
AF performance seems extremely good so far. I was shooting in very low light at dusk last night with my 200-400mm f4G VR1 and it was beyond expectations. I need to tweak lock, etc. to match my preferences on my D810 but so far it is crazy fast and extremely accurate even at full 10fps.
Funny about auto AF fine tune, I could not find it in the manual so I had to google the instructions instead.
The biggest D750 Homer on the planet is all over youtube today drooling over the D500. He went to the extent of saying it is much better than the D750.

ACE Photo in Northern Virginia. Thankfully, I had pre-ordered it, as I think they still had a waiting list of people even after the first shipment.
I got my 200-500 from them. They have a big store in Sterling. I usually buy from District Camera in Burke, Va. Well stocked, great service, very nice people and very reasonable prices on trade-ins (better than KEH usually).

So far I am really liking this camera.
That's interesting. I was talking to a salesperson at a big camera store in PA and he stated that one of the Nikon, oem batteries manufactured in 2012 did not work with the D500, but otherwise do worked fine. Condition was 1.
I'm a little confused, maybe you guys can help. Nikon says the D500 has a 200 shot RAW buffer, but when I set it to RAW, Lossless 14bit and look at the top screen and half press the shutter it says, [r37]. Where does the 200 that Nikon says come in. If anyone can explain this that would be great. Thanks.

Now if the weather would just clear up.
Is your primary slot the XQD card? That is probably the only way to get the 200 shot RAW buffer in RAW mode. Might also need the XQD that is 440 MB/s Read and 400 MB/s write to achieve that, could be wrong though!

Yes, have the XQD set to primary and have the fastest card, Lexer 2933x
