p.1 #1 · D100 vs. D70... like to be... or not to be!

I've got a dilemma!

I'm a still beginer... and i'm going to change my equipment to Digital SLR
As you can see I've got F90X with 28-70 / f3,5-4,5... and my SB-26
I prefer journalism, and mostly extrem sports photography! And i have no idea... which of them (D70 or D100) will be bether for me!?

My lens and flash will stay for the beggining.. i will upgrade this equipment later!

I know that D70 is a little bit faster.... that it can synchronize with SB-800 even to 1/500 s.... but i still don't know the advantages of the D100.

Please help me! I don't want to regret my choise!

If you like sports photography I suggest you look into buying a 2nd hand Nikon d1 or d1h if you can afford it. here's another suggestion; if you buy a good FILM 35 slr, you could save some money for a decent 2nd lens, like an 80-200. Digital is fun, modern and RIGHT NOW, but unless you have deadlines to meet, I'd stick to film, even black and white which you could process and print yourself. Learn what works and what doesn't while taking the time to look @ your film and print it. That's the old school way of learning photography which digitalia doesn't really allow you since you can just delete the stuff that "didn't come out right".
my .02 cents.

The only reason I didn't dump my D100 when the D70 came out is the lack of a vertical grip (MBD100) for the D70. If you don't care about that option then go w/the D70. It's just plain better.

Fotorican: You are right... but it's expensive... to shoot by 35mm camera!
I'm an apprentice in a newspaper...so I can use their scanner...and I have free service in ProfiLab (photolab)
But i still have to buy films... and spend hours on scanning!.. and it's not so attractive :-)
I can't even imagine.. how could I shoot so often without my beloved "Warshaw's Life" redaction.

Adam,

Look for a used D1x. They are starting to sell for about 1.5 times the new price of a D70. The D1x will suit your purposes better than either of the others.

The focusing and metering of the D70 are fast, accurate, and very state of the art, battery life is awsome, white balance excellent, iTTL flash is virtually fool-proof, camera is lightweight, wakes up immediately, and is a true pleasure to carry around. Contrary to what you may have heard, more mega-pixels is better. Unless you need more than 3fps, this camera with a good lens will give very satisfactory results...just my opinion!

PS: DIGITAL IS DEFINATELY THE WAY TO GO! (my scanner got cob-webs now!)

Adam,
I'd like to reinforce what John (Stripper) said. If you can spring for the added cost, you will find that the 1) speed, 2) durability and 3) image quality of the D1x is better than either the D70 or the D100... depite the sensor pixel differences!

On the other hand, if you wish to stay with the D70/100 choices, then some of the distringuishing characteristics would be:
D70 - sharper images, slightly lighter, cost.
D100 - durable, can be used with a verticle grip (which enables the use of a remote release).
Either camera is very easy on batteries. Unless you are a high volume shooter, you can save the cost of the grip, by simply buying a spare battery.

For what its worth - I'd trade my 6Mp for the image quality of a D1x anyday... but I think I'll hold out for a D2x, and turn my D100 over to my wife.

Best wishes & good luck. -Art

Agree with all above:

I got a very cheap F5 and love it!

I have a great D100 and love it (vertical grip, build, release, etc)

Looking to get a cheap D1x ..... seeing them go for a tad under $3k AU

Not convinced on the D70 build and features

Flash Synch, but correct me if i am wrong, but the SB800 allows u to synch at any speed regardless of camera synch?

That's true for bodies that support Nikon's Creative Lighting System, the D100 does NOT. I have the D100 (and SB800) and I would kill for a synch speed > 1/180.

Be very careful about those prices! Alot of rip-off scams going on. Do a search regarding whoever your interested in purchasing from and check to see what people are saying.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Photography as a hobby or profession is expensive whether digital or film...

most of this thread is convincing me to retire the d100 in favour of the d70. I have no interest in a vertical grip beyond the better battery life. then i'll see what i can afford in the new year or wait to see what's announced at PMA.

why? well they d100 is starting to annoy me with it's frustrating buffer, & i don't have a need for the d2h
and now i have an sb800 i want to use the features i miss currently

heck, they made a vertical grip for the drebel, maybe nikon will follow at some point.
