What do you think can it get fixed?

The front element on the 300 2.8 looks fine because of the lens hood. The sensor from what I can tell on the D810 looks fine its just the lens mount on both the camera and the lens that were damaged. And debris what looks like mostly dust.

Yes...as long as the chassis (or subframe) of the D810 hasn't cracked. The estimate is free.

Yes, it most likely can get fixed, it's just a matter of cost.

Please tell me you have insurance.

Yeah, the mount is metal but being held on or screwed on by some plastic?

The plastic is there to be sacrificial so that the important parts aren't bent or damaged. Be thankful for good design

THAT'S going to cost you.

The sub-frame that holds the actual metal lens mount plate has been completely sheared off it's mountings, the mirror appears damaged, and the lens communication port has lost a screw with possible ribbon cable issues internally.

On the bright side (as someone mentioned) you were saved by design with the lens breaking away freely and thus avoiding real rear element, rear mount, and communication issues with the 300.

I'm very sorry for your trouble my friend. Don't feel too too bad, this has happens to all of us at one time or another (not much consolation -- I know) but live and learn, you'll not go out with something like this without the LENS strap on... or, free-bombing it quite so freely again.

Keep us in the loop !

This feels a little like slowing down when you encounter a car crash in the other lane... you don't really want to look but can't quite stop yourself. You hope everyone is okay but then why are the ambulances coming?

This is our worst nightmare, of course. Gear is expensive and even if it can be repaired there will likely be a cost involved. Yes, there is insurance but for damage resulting from dropping the gear? If you have that kind of insurance you have more foresight than most of us have.

I wish you well in sorting this out. I FEEL your pain...

Out of curiosity, how far did it fall and what did it land on?

Thanks the camera and lens is packed and shipped back to Nikon Repair Center in IL. How long would you think it will take for repairs? In all the years I've never dropped a camera. Needless to say I lost some sleep over it.

If you bought this less than 90 days ago, with a credit card, they will cover the cost of the replacement.

In fact, even if longer, if you call them up and ask REALLY nicely - and are a good/established customer, they will sometimes cover it even beyond 90 days.

The design appears to have done it's job. The D810 has the plastic in the mount as a break away design for just such an event. This was done as a result of the D800 impact damage with heavy lenses that was bending the frames to the point of not being able to realign the lens for proper focus resulting in a non repairable camera.
It will be repairable and it only hurts once when you pay.
Good luck.
