I've read a few reports of users complaining about the EVF on the A7RII with respect to manual focusing. Specifically there seems to be some commentary on the ability to be able to distinguish fine details with the new EVF. Some commentators have stated that the A7R EVF is superior. I have not used the A7R but do own a A7II and for my eyes I find this EVF to be just fine.
Can anyone confirm or deny the A7RII EVF quality in comparison to say an A7II. Hoping that because of the high MP something isn't going on with how the camera must downsample the feed from the sensor into the EVF.
If anything, it should be better than the previous generation as it is much high resolution and quite a bit bigger. However, wouldn't it *have* to be downsampled? Otherwise, it would have to be a 42mp evf, right?
Have I misunderstood the specs? I thought the resolution (pixels in the EVF) were the same, but the magnification of the optics is greater in the new body, so not greater resolution, just greater magnification? Maybe a coarser view of the same resolution is causing problems for some to "see" focus.
The Nikon D800 had a problem with magnified Live View Focusing that wasn't corrected until release of the D810. Since the problem only affected manual focus situations and most Nikon lenses are AF, Nikon had not done proper engineering. The problem was related to the large sensor because the D700 did not have the problem. It sounds like Sony may have a similar situation. If so will it take a revised A7R III to fix the problem?? I plan on using Canon tilt shitt lenses on my A7R II so this is potentially a huge impact to me.

I am keeping my fingers crossed it will not be a problem. I guess we will all know more in a few days as more users get their hands on it. I will see it tomorrow at my door.

I would be very surprised if Sony introduced a clarity problem in its LV feed - they've never had one before, up to and including the 36MP A7r. In fact the clarity of the A7r's LV is better than both the A7 and A7s due to the higher magnification available. Here are some videos I did a while ago comparing all three - watch in HD for best results:
I don't understand it either which is why I posted this. Doesn't make sense to me. I highly doubt we have a D800 redux. That would deem the camera useless.
Snapsy thank you for the D800 Live View Demonstration. Although the picture setting enhancements did improve the situation, the D810 Live View is even better. I used shift - tilt lenses on the Nikon and never enjoyed manually focusing the D800. My A7RII ships out of B&H tomorrow so I will have to wait a few days to examine the A7RII Live View Situation. Over the past months I have been using the A7 with manual focus lenses and the Live View of the Sony has been excellent so I am hoping the best for the new A7RII.
When you manually engage a loxia lens it doesn't do 12x it does the initial zoom which I think is 5. This would imply a change in usability. Which for me would be pretty shitty!

Only affect 5x mode if true, still functional at 12.5x. Not too much of a deal-breaker
Oh dear . . . I certainly hope that is not true as that is the only mode I would be using this camera in. Hopefully a FW fix for such a thing unless it's a hardware limitation.
I remember I was the first to report the D800 liveview issue. I got hammered for saying it was not good for critical focusing in low light.
snapsy probably remembers it.
Snapsy, I was too cheap to get fast shipping from B&H so you have a three day lead on me for Sony A7RII testing. Please let us know your findings. I doubt that Nikon even considered the D800 for manual lens focussing applications, but Sony knows that their new A7RII will see lots of manual focus lens work so we shouldn't have a problem.

Well keep in mind the comments from the Dear Susan users said there was not a problem with native lenses and A mount lenses, only with third party lenses. I can't figure out why that would be true, but it might mean the Loxia lenses would do fine. Of course the person on the Digilloyd blog says it is there with the Loxia lenses specifically. It is still early and these are just two reports. Let's wait until we hear from more testers. I prefer the 12.5X myself, but having good magnification is very important to me, so I will be watching this closely.
