p.1 #1 · An Admission on the FE 55/1.8

So, this lens has been out for quite a while now, and I know many, many of you own it and have owned it for a long time, so much of this will not be news, but I remember how strongly I felt when this lens was announced, and felt the need to correct myself.

When the A7 and the first FE lenses were announced, I saw the projected price (at that point, rumored to be 1100 Euro) and got very upset. Partially because I was pretty excited for a small FF camera for occasional use, and a fast normal has been a staple of my kit for years. Then Sony announces an f/1.8 normal and prices it into the stratosphere (has there been another non-Leica f/1.8 or slower normal prime this expensive?)

In October of 2013, I said the following things: "SAR puts the price of the 55/1.8 at an absurd €1100. Are they smoking crack? I don't care how good it is, unless your name is Leica, you can't charge over a grand for an f/1.8 normal."

When called about about the "I don't care" part, I replied:"Yeah, I don't care how good it is. €1100 for an f/1.8 normal is highway robbery. At $400, I'd say it had better be outstanding, at $600, you're pushing the boundaries of acceptable. At $1100+, you're smoking something.

This is TRIPLE the price of the other main manufacturers 50/1.4s and about 10 times the price of a typical 50/1.8. Yes, in sure it will be optically better, but Zeiss' own 50/1.4 planar is only $725. This is nearly double that cost, for an f/1.8 normal.

You want to spend that kind of cash for those lenses, be my guest. Me? No."

Well, I was wrong. I care about how good it is, and boy is it good. It's not just the fact that it's quite sharp into the corners wide open (which is darn impressive), nor the generally pleasing bokeh, nor the high contrast that Zeiss is known for. I mean, it is those things, but it's more the combination of all of them together, leading to really outstanding depth to the images that make the subject pop out just enough to be convincing, without melting people into soup. Sure, it's not perfect (LoCa, vignetting), but man, I've owned it for 4 days and it's already one of my favorite lenses around.

In my defense, part of my worry with the above was the total system cost: if an f/1.8 normal was $1,000, what would an 85/1.8 cost, or a 50/1.4? Most of those worries have been somewhat unfounded (though it's not like the lenses are cheap)...but with regards to the 55/1.8, yeah, I was wrong.

I went through the same path.
The 55 is very very good, why did they changed the winning formula with the 28?

Yep, I remember all of that...

So, your copy is evenly sharp on both sides at various distances? Even with the cheaper prices available, concern over quality control or just the inherent inaccuracy of the design have sort of kept me away. Maybe I will take a chance on one at some point.

Yup. My copy shows no decentering (that I can discern, anyway). Quite sharp across the frame at any focus distance. I've found AF to be very accurate overall as well.

I did pay full retail at my local store because of the recent concerns over QC. It was worth the full price to have the ability to do a quick 1:1 exchange without a hassle if I needed to. Luckily that won't be needed.

I have struggled with three copies of the lens, all with a tilted plane of focus on my camera, and find it close to unacceptable that I must shim a $1000 normal with a small piece of self adhesive tape on one side of the mount to straighten things up, but still, I like the lens a lot and i am going to keep it.

On the down side: What the heck is up with Sony and their serial number stickers? A $1000 lens, and there's a crappy sticker with the serial number that isn't even a good sticker (Mine is already pulling up at all four edges after 4 days). I've documented what it is, as well as the Zeiss front serial number (which is different...again, dumb). But this is a minor point.

As to QA/QC, I've found that ll manufacturers have some issues and it's really luck of the draw. My 55/1.8 is darn near perfect, so I ended up good on this end this time, as I have most of the time. I've also gotten unlucky. Shooting Canon, I went through three Sigma 30/1.4's before getting one that could focus worth a darn. I also had a 35mm f/1.4L that had problems (Second one was fine), and a 50/1.2L that had focus issues. I went through three Olympus 12mm f/2's due to tilted elements, much like is described about this lens. The third one was fantastic, though. I went through three Fuji 56/1.2's as well. First one had a decentered element AND the focus clutch mechanism broke after a week, making it impossible to focus the lens when tilting the lens up or down. Second one started coming apart at the barrel. I've had the third for over a year and it's been impeccable (probably my favorite lens of all time). I had a bad Panasonic 14/2.5 as well. However, over the years, probably 90% of my gear has been outstanding out of the box on the first go round.

I got lucky with my third copy. This one doesn't show any decentering.
What I like most about this lens is how it renders wide open at mid distance.

Here's a quick sample I took at a fair distance at f/8 to show what I'm getting. Full shot:

Center (This was only lightly sharpened...60% at 0.8px, but perhaps I'd need to back off given the insane levels of sharpness this lens gives):

Maybe Sigma has solved the QC issue by testing every single lens of their newer lines and other manufacturers will follow suit.

I remember your comments and feeling the exact same way. As the price started dropping, I caved and am so glad I did. I tried two copies, and picked the one with less issues on the left side of the frame. Once I ironed out some AF troubles, I've really enjoyed using it. For mine, the curvature is very evident wide open and visible at f/4 if you look hard, but is not visible at f/8. The lens is so good otherwise that I typically use it at f/1.8-2.8 depending on how much I need in focus, or f/8 when I want everything in focus.

It's such a great all-rounder of a lens that I end up keeping it on board for general purpose usage as long as I have a wider lens in the bag. It's funny when a lens changes your way of shooting. Up until this point I've been a die-hard 35mm shooter, but it's caused me to spread my wings a little.

If you get a nice copy it is excellent for stitched pano's as well.

Before the 55 1.8 was released. I felt the same way. After i saw some sample pictures on SAR. It changed my mind. I dont own the lens anymore, but its not due to quality. I love the lens. I just couldnt get used to the focal length. The copy i had was sharp, corner to corner.

I love the FE 55/1.8 on the A7s. It is combination of the "fat" pixels and low light capabilities that I make this lens shine IMO. For portraits it is excellent, and with the A7s, the FE 55/1.8 locks AF on faces in part moonlit evenings.

I always saw it differently, as I knew Sony were building a lens system more like Leica / Zeiss than other FF makers. There was never a reason to use the C/N 50s as the frame of reference, and I got to the MTF and better reviews early on (like 3D Kraft) and used the 55 extensively early. People are still trying to fault it, and with each fault being largely debunked or seen as moderate WRT other lenses, they get more shrill. Last and favourite of mine so far was 'loads of LoCA', lol. Many others think it's clinical and lacks appeal, a kind of back-handed compliment in a normal. As I've been saying since its release, it's very typical of the differences between Sony and C/N - Sony make lenses that are very much influenced by Zeiss in being *broad spectrum lenses*, that are excellent across the aperture range and focal distance range, that put overall performance above flashiness, and that emphasise correction of curvature above highest central acutance (5-10 lpmm). I hope you complain plenty about the faster C/N normal lenses costing ~$1700 - very expensive for very narrow focus lenses.

So it's essentially a different philosophy. C/N make plain jane plain performance normals for Joe Sixpack for a few hundreds and hope people believe their meme of 'all normal lenses are much the same' allied to the meme of 'they are all the same at f8', then make exotica for the well-heeled and sell them as 'special' for big dollars. The exact same design philosophy is at work with the new Batis lenses, by the way. Moderate speed, fine use of glass typing, excellent correction, fine corners, high in the medium price bracket. In this way, what looks like expensive lenses turn out cheaper and more effective overall. Sigma too but they have lower prices from more volume, eating C/N's lunch.

I feel the same way towards this lens. It gives me a look that none of my other lens does. It is a very special look.
