p.1 #1 · Does Lightroom 6 standalone version require an Adobe ID?

Before spending my hard-earned money, I wanted to know if Lightroom 6 standalone version requires an Adobe ID.

Any insight?

Not only that but it regularly checks via the internet to see you are who you say you are. Paranoia rules ok if you want to use LR6

Unfortunately however, the program is very good.

The thing is LR6 is quite a bit faster and has some very useful new features. I think the upgrade is worth it.

can someone explain what an Adobe ID is, and why it is bad or troublesome to have one?

As far as I knew, lightroom 5.7 doesn't phone home. Is this new with V 6? I have V 5.7 on multiple computers and have never noticed it using the internet for verification and actually I am not usually connected to the internet when I am using it. I don't like anything connecting to my PC without me knowing.

That is creepy. I've tightened up security quite a bit on my home network and have a HW security appliance set to block a lot of this sort of garbage. Thanks for keeping me from wasting my money on LR6.

Thats a little disturbing. Adobe should not be doing this level of monitoring.

George - you are way ahead of the crowd! I don't think most people have any idea how many security holes they have in their home networks. We should all be taking these types of precautions.

When you open any other Adobe application Lightoom 6 phones home and reports it to Adobe's leased Amazon servers.

Wow, thanks for presenting that information. I was on the fence about upgrading to LR6 -- you've helped me make the decision.

Every time I think Adobe can't get any sleazier, they show me I'm wrong!

Just doing a bit of quick testing i have to say that i don't get that much outgoing traffic. I have some traffic when LR initially starts (to akamai, amazon and adobe servers) which is presumably the authentication, but nothing much whilst it is running, but nothing that seems to correlate with me clicking on different modules or folders.

Of course the map module gives a burst of traffic to google, and the book module gives a burst to blurb, but thats expected i think.

I think it might behave differently when you block and when you don't - when you block it will keep re-trying the connection, and so the logs will pile up. If you want to see if you are being monitored, you need to let it behave normally. I'd be interested to see what others find in this regard.

That certainly could be the case. I would recommend everyone does their own due diligence.

Here are my observations:

With the firewall up if I start to tap on different folders in Lightroom 6 I get a new connection blocked in my firewall log each time I tap for each of those seconds. If I stop tapping on the folders the firewall stops logging new connection attempts. So there is a consistency in the attempt of Lightroom to connect to the Internet corresponding to my activity in Lightroom. It might behave differently if the attempt was never blocked.

Also when I open up Photoshop while Lightroom is running Lightroom makes another attempt to connect at that very moment.

I don't know what the purpose of the packets are. Only Adobe would knows that. I do know that Lightroom 5.x doesn't do this at all. And I don't think Lightroom 6 should be doing this either. It might open up a security vulnerability to be exploited in my opinion depending on what they are doing and how it is implemented. I can say I certainly don't welcome it on my computer. However, I've decided to keep Lightroom 6 personally. I want the updated camera support for the upcoming 5Dsr.

But certainly everyone should look at the data posted here and do their own assessment and verify my observations to their own satisfaction. Then decide if this is something they can live with or not. Personally I'm going to live with it. But I'm not going to like it.

I look forward to your observations.

Wow...there's a lot of FUD in this thread.

In the "Photoshop Insider Training" tutorial produced by Lynda.com for Photoshop CS6; Photoshop's Product Manager Bryan O'Neil Hughes said that Adobe implemented a voluntary, "opt-in" program in CS5 called Headlights that enables Adobe to see how users use the tools in Photoshop, and how frequently they are used.

http://www.lynda.com/Photoshop-tutorials/Reinventing-Crop-tool/107187/111655-4.html

"One of the most difficult parts of my job as the Senior Product Manager of Photoshop is deciding which areas of the application to work on and which areas not to. And one of the things that helped the most in CS6 was having access to what's called Headlights. In CS5 we implemented functionality called Headlights, which allows for an Opt-in program where we can see how people are using the application. Now we can't see a Photoshop user's images, but we can see which tools they're using, which menus they're going through, which features they're navigating through.

So if someone who's charting the course on where we're going to develop the application, this is priceless. And one of the things that we found out in looking at all of that CS5 data, and we had tens of millions of records, is that overwhelmingly the most used tool was the Crop tool. And the Crop tool really hadn't been changed a lot over the course of over two decades; it had been with Photoshop since the start. It's obviously a fundamental part of the workflow, but it really hadn't changed whole a lot. It was very clear to us that there's a huge opportunity for changing the Crop tool in Photoshop."

So this information that Adobe collects user info has been known for at least 5 years when Photoshop CS5 was released and now the Headlights program has been extended to Lightroom 6. It is also voluntary so you don't have to participate if you don't want to. But if you're the kind of user that click the "OK" button before reading then you might have ok'd the monitoring without noticing. When you start Lightroom 6 for the first time there's a huge notice that say's that monitoring is turned on by default and gives instructions on how to turn it off.

I don't see it as a big deal for Adobe to know how I'm using Lightroom since it tells them what features they need to prioritize in future releases. Of course, if you're the paranoid sort, you could easily block access to Adobe's servers in your Hosts file or with a firewall.

The Amazon servers are registered to MarkMonitor: https://www.markmonitor.com/

This is a tread about if an Adobe ID is required to use Lightroom 6. I answered that question. I was asked a second question about Lightroom 6 connecting to the Internet (versus Lightroom 5). I answered that and documented it with screenshots.

I clearly stated above that "However, even though I opted out the first day I installed Lightroom 6 it is still connecting to the Internet continuously while I'm using it." So there is no FUD here. I even posted screenshots above showing how to opt out using the Adobe web site. I also made it clear that Adobe does not give you the option to opt out of monitoring during application installation using a perpetual license key nor does it give you the opportunity to opt out using the preferences option in the application and I find that appalling. So your comment about clicking OK to accept monitoring during install is incorrect. You can't not agree to be monitored during the install. The only notice is that you have to log into your Adobe Account to disable monitoring as I explained above. Even though I logged into my Adobe Account the very first day immediately after installation Lightroom 6 is still connecting to the Internet. Also if you block Lightroom 6 from accessing the internet using Comodo firewall it slows down to a level that makes it unusable. So if I've opted out and its still connects continuously to the Internet what is voluntary about it? I can monitor Lightroom 5, Capture One 8, DXO 10 using the same tools and none of them connect continuously to the Internet. I can block them form the Internet with Comodo firewall and they don't slow down to a crawl. So what makes Lightroom 6 different?

Some people are concerned about this issue. If they want to start a thread to discuss it I don't see a problem with that. I have plenty of people that I work with that will not install applications that need to chatter with the internet nor will they let them be installed in their work environment. Others are worried that the application won't stay activated when they need it. These are adults. They want to know the facts and make up their own mind about the issue. I personally stated above that after reviewing all these facts I have decided I'm going to continue to use Lightroom 6. Others have decided not to. People have different concerns depending on their own particular situation. I'm not sure why you would call it FUD.
