Canon USA significantly lowered the 'Minimum Advertised Price' for the EOS 5D Mark III & EOS 6D bodies. Beyond the permanent price drop, Canon is now offering instant rebates instead of mail-in rebates for most DSLRs including the newer Canon EOS 7D Mark II.

Not selling enough cameras...not hitting their revenue projections. If they were selling like hotcakes, you would never see a drop.
Nah. That's what everyone said at the time the 5D3 was released. One even predicted the demise of Canon as a company.
There are many reasons to reduce prices on cameras. Some cameras, for example the 5D3 and 6D, have long ago paid back their R&D costs and met their profit targets.
In 8 months, the Yen has fallen 15 % against the US dollar. So a lower dollar sale price in the USA returns the same quantity of Yen back to Japan. Hence they drop the price to boost sales and rake in more profit, at no loss of Yen to the company.

The 5Ds is noisy and slow, so it is more of a niche camera and not a general replacement for the 5D III.

I agree the 5Ds is a niche camera, but how can it be noisy and slow? It has neither speakers nor wheels.

I shoots wedding and Portraits , 5 Fps is more then I ever needed. I never shoot above 6400 ISO.
Between 22 MP and over 50MP. the one with higher MP is always on my priority listed.

Are you happy with the 7D II at high ISO compared to the 5D III at the same ISO?

I own both camera and both camera will get the job done.
Long ago I used to shoot with Hasselblad film camera.
I chose Medium format over 35mm camera because is images quality and the
ability to crop afterward.

Actually, there is no mystery to the price drop. Once the new model was confirmed to be on the way, Canon is helping grease the pipeline to clear out the 5Diii in preparation for the new model. The same thing happened to the 5Dii when the III became available.
There is an even better deal at B&H than the thread mentioned. There is a combo body and printer deal. After mail in rebate, you get both for $2249.
