p.1 #1 · 16mm pancake on A7 full frame - how much crop?
As I consider a jump from Nikon FX to Sony A7, I'm trying to figure out a wide angle solution. I don't shoot wider than 35mm much, so I'm willing to make some compromises for wide angle, and with an emphasis and small, light, and cheap.
I found this video showing the 16mm and 10-18 used on full-frame A7:
What he didn't mention, and I can't tell very well, is how much outside the APS-C area is useable on the 16mm? Has anyone played with how much you need to crop to get rid of the major vignetting? Anyone care to upload a full frame image with the 16? (different apertures and focus distances would be helpful also)

Having used this lens extensively, I wouldn't expect anything outside of the APS-C area to be usable. Why? My copy still has less sharp and lower contrast corners at f/8 on APS-C. Outside the APS-C image circle, I'd wager that it gets pretty ugly.
I've got an A7 on the way (ordered it yesterday!) so I'd be happy to take some samples if no one else can.

I tried out my SEL16F28, with and without the VCL-ECU1. I didn't look too closely, but the VCL-ECU1 doesn't do much to widen the view. I can try to take an aperture series if you're interested, without and/or with the VCL-ECU1 0.75x adapter.

I've been using it with my A7 and it works reasonably well if you don't care to much about the corners when you change to FF mode. In APS-C mode it gives around a 10MP still by default if you switch to FF you should be able to crop out an image of around 15MP with only the extreme corners smearing, or ~20MP if your willing to accept smearing 200-300pixels in from the corners. You can also remove the plastic guard to expand the image circle a bit further, doing so usually results in the vignetting only occurring on the sides of the frame, if you don't want to keep the guard permanently off you can do what I did which is remove the guard and expand the rectangular hole in it to extend the area covered then replace the modified guard.
How noticeable the vignetting and smearing is seems somewhat dependent on the shot focus distance, tone of image, aperture and lighting seem to effect it to some degree or another.

I'm going to have to try it out for astro/aurora - I wasn't expecting to be able to use this lens with my A7, but it'd be handy if it performed half-OK.

If you use it with the plastic back guard removed or you modify the backguard to in enlarge the exit pupil it's likely the vignetting won't be particularly noticeable, and depending on exactly what falls within the extreme corners the smearing may not be noticeable as well.

I can't comment on the 16mm but I have the 10-18 on a a7r. From 12-16 roughly, it covers ff with no problem on both extremes there is some crop. The quality however is great and it is light and small compared to Nikon or Canon.
