p.1 #1 · Lindy Point last night (plus earlier in the day)
Last evening, after surviving a day of high winds, falling temperatures and intermittent rain that changed to sleet, photographers from various backgrounds gathered at Lindy Point in Blackwater Falls State Park. Joe Rossbach brought a tour and with the other ad hoc photographers the viewing deck and surrounding rocks were covered with tripods and their attendants. I suspect Lindy Point in the first weekend of October approaches the scene at Maroon Bells!
At any rate, the rain clouds started to break up and promising openings began to appear about an hour before sunset. The actual sunset offered little color, but the broken clouds put on a show crepuscular rays and patches of late afternoon sunshine that repeatedly moved up the canyon. The below is from just one such episode. It would be interesting to see what others came away with if there were any other FMers there.
Edit: I'm adding one from nearly the same location from earlier in the day, when the the unsettled weather was at it height. I could only spend a few minutes out on the rock, as the wind was whipping cold rain right up the canyon to this exposed ledge. http://www.pbase.com/dsjtecserv/image/157711829/original.jpg

Looks good Dave. I was there last year when Joe and his gang were there so I can definitely empathize. It's good to see the nice color in the trees up close. I left the day before you took this pic and am coming back later this week. I hope the wind doesn't knock the leaves off.

Thanks, Kevin. I was there on Friday too! Where were you that day?
This is the second or third time I've been there when Joe's or another tour is there. Not surprising since the first weekend of October is reliable prime time. I made a point of getting there an hour and a half before sunset to claim my spot. Even so I had to clone a 5DIII and 24 mm T/SE out of the bottom of the frame!

Dave, I actually left Friday morning; I had been there since Monday. I concentrated mostly on Dolly Sods while I was there since the color was great at Bear Rocks this year. As I believe you mentioned in another thread, I think some good color should come in to Blackwater Falls SP this week and I'm going to try and make it back. Contending with the weather may be another issue.

Dave, Hey its Matt from, well, Lindy point and Douglas Falls.
Very nice image, always love seeing others perspectives on shoots. And yes, it was a little crazy with that tour group there. And the people seemed to just keep showing up. As much as I do prefer to shoot with a few others, that was a bit much. Still nice to see people getting out and taking photos.
I like your composition on this one, I think you had the better spot last night. I like the lighting you chose to share on this one too. Was just a shame the sunset didn't really deliver too much. A splash of color a bit later, then just nothing.

Hi, Matt. Good to make the connection online too! I thought I might be overdoing it to get there 1 1/2 hours early, but people started arriving the same time as me, and I knew from past experience that I wanted that spot!
It was good talking at both venues. I look forward to seeing your Douglas Falls shots especially.

Yea, it was good to meet you too and hopefully in the future we could potentially meet up for another shoot at some point.
As for getting there an hour and a half early, I honestly wanted to do the same, but since my friends showed up, we were running a bit late one time and had to at least hit one or two other spots before we headed out that way.
My douglas falls shots did not turn out as well as I was hoping. The odd angles I needed to set up my camera ended up meaning some of my shots were too crooked to salvage without cropping away large too large of a portion. But hopefully I have one or two that might be worth processing.

Hello Dave, I have been waiting for your shots and this Lindy Point image is very lovely, indeed. I like the composition and colors. The color of the clouds/sky seems to match nicely with the chimney rocks.. The red leaves popped the scene nicely.
Now from the conversation here.. I should expect the Douglas Falls Image from you..!! That is my favorite falls there. Douglas Falls is also in my agenda this time.
Speaking of Joe and his gang.. I know his workshop schedule.. and other's.. so my going to the Balckwater Falls is during the weekdays.. avoiding too many people there.. Hope the colors are great.

Thanks Kee. Like you, I try to get there during the week. However this year I had an opportunity to be in the Adirondacks earlier in the week I couldn't pass up, and this coming week I need to be in New Orleans -- of all places to be in October! I suspect your schedule will work out for you quite well, and I look forward to seeing the results. Don't pass up Bear Rocks and other parts of Dolly Sods. While the wind may have taken a lot of leaves off the blueberries, their brilliance this year would make it worthwhile to seek out a sheltered area among the rocks. And the deciduous trees up there were good too, so it may be worth a half-day trip, at least.

Nice rays on the ridges. I need to check this place out. Been backpacking in Dolly Sods, but have not made over to Blackwater Falls. I wonder how the second one would look in BW, especially with some added contrast to clouds.

Thanks gempixel, mountws1, Scott, and Edwin. You can probably see why photographers gather there: the foreground and view are already dramatic, and the West Virginia mountain weather is a good bet to add another element.
Edwin I think B&W might be a good idea for the daytime one. I have to leave on a trip but I'll experiment with that when I get back.
