p.1 #1 · D810 fussy with CF cards?

Just received my D810 and I was trying some CF cards that I had on hand. The first card (Lexar 16GB) worked fine. Then all of the Kingston cards I have (8GB and 16GB) would not read ("ERR" on the LCD control panel, refuse to format). I even tried a couple of really old CF cards (non-Kingston) that are 1 and 2 GB and they all worked fine. Seems like just the Kingston cards that are giving me trouble.

Anyone had this issue? If this has been discussed previously, just point me to a link. Perhaps this issue happened with D800s also?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Dave

P.S. I have some SanDisk SD cards on order (64GB and 32GB). These files are big!

In the past, Nikon has gone to some trouble to ensure Lexar and Sandisk compatibility (YOU still have to be wary of fake cards). Other brands, it seems, are mostly reported on a go/no-go basis in the compatability list.

Using Transcend 400x 32gb. Seems OK but gets warm with every shot

Thanks. I guess it is good that I've ordered SanDisk cards. Although it is odd to me that all of the cards have worked without problem in my D700.

Good to know. Thanks.

With the last firmware update of the D4 and D800, Nikon added some additional error checking when transferring data to the cards. Some batches of various make cards were not designed to meet the complete specifications of the CF standard and therefore do not work. Lexar being one which replaced the cards for free. I suspect that you are having a similar issue with your Kingston cards.

Interesting. That's a good explanation for why the cards work in the D700 but not in the new camera. Maybe I will check with Kingston to see if they have anything to say.

It's a number of years since I used Nikon but even then some of the bodies did not like Kingston cards.

Not that it should matter too much, but honestly with SD/CF cards being so cheap these days, just get the Sandisk Pro's and be done with it. I don't find it's worth it to save a few dollars on the cheaper cards which almost always have lower sustained write speeds (the feature that is most important).

In Canada, most CF/SD cards are a hilarious rip-off compared to the USA, so I just order from B&H anyway haha. For $100 I can get a 16GB CF and 16GB SD Sandisk Pro 160/95 MB/s combo, which is good for about 800 14 bit RAWs. Even to double that is still very reasonable compared to the camera cost. I realize pros, videographers, etc. might need a few more sets, but cost would be even less of an issue if they made their living that way. Memory ends up being such a small % of the cost after you pay $3200 for the camera that a long time ago I stopped buying the cheap cards and I've been much happier ever since, especially since they are such an important part with regard to both speed and reliability.

That's just my take on it, anyway. I realize it would be nice to have flawless compatibility with all cards, but the fastest cards are also the most reliable and they're all cheap relative to the rest of the gear so why not?

The d800 didn't like Kingston cards they wouldn't work at all on it which sucked. On the nikon site they had cards that would work with the 800 which should be similar to the 810

I have exchanged e-mails with Kingston technical support and they acknowledged that they have a compatibility problem with their CF cards and the D810 body. They said that their SD cards work without any issues. Sounded like they were working to identify the specifics of the CF card issue and get a fix implemented.

Dave, I sent them a message yesterday as well, have not heard back yet. Did they give you any idea of what they plan to do?

It was interesting. . .

First I got an e-mail giving me a return authorization, with the promise of an exchange for a new card. Then I got another e-mail that said there was an incompatibility between the Kingston CF cards and the D810. The second e-mail indicated that "it will probably be a few more weeks before we can replace this card with a compatible one."
