I've been shooting with my new D4s for about 6 weeks. Today while shooting baseball, the AF got sluggish and then the D4s locked up. It stayed like that for several hours. I tried other lenses to no avail. Then later I picked it up and pushed the shutter and it took off, like new. I was using my 400 f2.8 AFII lens when it started.
Does anyone have any insight or advice? Should I send it in? Was this a freak one time event? UGHHHH

Sometimes cleaning contacts on both the lens and camera can fix this if dirt was the issue.
Nikon DSLRs still use mechanical aperture lever and a little pressure/bend/twist can cause this flashing ERR message. There might be other reasons, but this is one of the common causes and if this is the case, eventually Nikon will have to replace this lever assembly. If the lever got stiff or stuck, this error can also pop up.

"Err" message is often caused by oil on the camera's contacts. Now that the message has gone away and the contacts have been clean, you probably don't have to worry. I've never experienced this, but have seen the "err" message and cleared it by removing the battery from my D4. I've heard others say they calibrated their new battery and never had the problem again.
The bottom line is once cleared, the problem went away. I'd say call Nikon if it becomes something that seems to happen often.

After having owned and ran...daily all pro bodies from Nikon (D1x --> D4) since 2001, I can tell you this is not in anyway normal. 6 weeks and oil on a pin? Not likely.
My advice is plain to and to the point. If this occurs with ANY other lens. Ship it out now.
If it keeps occurring with the same glass, have both sent in. People go on about pins and dirt, whereas it's seldom a real issue. These are gold plated pins and it would almost take an act of God to not make contact given the design. I have had this occur with my 300 2.8 on my D3s.. Both went in, and it was the lens.

Same exact thing happened to me today...
I got the error message regardless of lens choice and I am unable to change or function any of the camera settings. The menu function still works though and I did re-install the firmware C:1.01 (what it came with), but the error still shows. Error is present with or without a lens and regardless of memory card combinations. None of my CF cards were in the serial number range that was shown in the bulletin.
My camera arrived Thursday night from B&H, I un-boxed it and held it and had visions of greatness to come. I get home from work last night and I take a hand full of shots with it after I set the correct time zone and familiarize myself with the controls. I head out to the local motorcross track to give it a work out. I took 12 pictures. I had moved from AF Single to AF Group and moved from Single Shot to CH a couple of shots before it quit. While taking the last shot it executed, the focus was slow to respond, that was the only symptom.
Several hours later after I laid every thing down and took a break from it. I sulked, washed the truck, to a nap. Then came back upstairs and re-inserted a battery. The "Err" message was there…. Ugggg… I then show my wife, who is standing there with me with fingers crossed, that it was indeed broke, when surprisingly the 'frackin thing took a picture!!!. I have since taken almost 300 pics using different lenses and settings including the high speed and group AF… far as I can tell all is good.

Dirt or oil on the mount of the pins of the lens is very common. We use to see it almost everyday on the shop. A wipe of both fixed the issue 9 out of 10 times.
Sometimes a removal of the battery and reset of camera settings was required.
Maybe 2 in 100 we would send the camera/lens away to Nikon. Sometimes it was a bent mount, dropped lens, etc.

I've been getting the same thing, I'm putting it down to the pressure/bend/twist previously mentioned. When shooting birds on a tripod I apply pressure with my left hand on the top of the lens. Using a 200-400 VR this was never a problem. Using the new 80-400VR with lighter materials I'm thinking this is the problem.

Shot with it today for several hours during a walk though a local natural forest park. Not a single hic'up. I have no idea what went on. I hope to be able to send it back for replacement as I have no confidence in this one. I have never had an issue before from any of my Nikon body's or lenses. Frick'n stings when it happens for the first time on a camera body that cost more than my all my other Nikon body's combined.

Just to update. I called B&H this morning and this body is going back to them and a new one is on its way to me. Fingers crossed the new one behaves better.

I have seen this happen on lenses with an aperture ring adjustment when the orange aperture lock slips off from the minimum f stop/highest number. The aperture ring can move slightly away from the normal locked position and Err out.

Agreed. I have seen this before as well, but once you take the culpret lens off and put a new lens on it would go away. Maybe sometimes you would have to manually function the aperture arm on the body itself but the Err message would go away.
Also in my history, when it is the lens that precipitated the Err message you could still adjust other functions on the body.
Oh well... this new body has not shown this error yet and I have strategically tried to re-create my previous behaviors and commands given to the one that failed on me.

Im thinking its a problem in the D4s...I too had the ERR message in the LCD @ about 3500 shutter clicks and it was about 6 weeks old and now again this past weekend....

I too feel oil or dirt is not the cause! lens and camera were almost brand new....where is the oil and dirt coming from to lock up a new camera...doesnt seem likely....and to have several cases of the same problem....something is up!
I'd say call Nikon if it becomes something that seems to happen often.
