p.1 #1 · grip strap recommendation for Canon 1D

I would like to hear some recommendations from satisfied customers.

My idea is that I would like some kind of strap for the 1D so that when my right hand is
gripping the camera (in landscape orientation), the strap would be snugly behind my hand
to add security when not using a neck strap. I have spent some time searching both here
and on B and H and am lost in the fog.

Have you looked at Canon's E1 hand strap? Works great for me with long lenses.

I personally don't use one, but I have heard quite a few people say that they are satisfied with Camdapter:

I love the E1, but now Canon only sells the E2. Crazy expensive, but it does come with an adapter that lets you attach the strap to the tripod socket. The E1 can only be used with a 1-Series or a grip.

I just bought a new E1 from Cowboy Studios:

It may be (probably is) a knock-off. But it is very hard to tell. Comparing to my old genuine E1, the Cowboy Studio version is actually better.

I am going to make a note of all these. I just placed the order for the used E1 at B and H (thanks aborr!!). This is just the advice I was looking for. We will see how I like the E1 and move on from there. I have found on things like this, that you just don't know how it is going to work for you till you try it, so you end up owning more than one. I try to avoid that process, but sometimes that is how it goes.

Thanks!!

If I don't like the E1, the next step will be the Markins -- it looks like a class act item.

Coincidentally, I just bought a TC-80N3 clone made by Cowboy Studios ($31).
It seems great, though I haven't used it heavily to see how it will hold up.
I guess Cowboy Studios sounds better than Beijing studios, or that
is what somebody thinks (like Pittsburgh Tools from Harbor Freight?).

I use the Camadapter handstrap on my 5D2, looped to a fitted Sunwayfoto Arca plate. It's 100% leather, very durable and actually made in USA. I owned a couple Canon E-1 straps and, while okay, they're made really cheaply with plastic exterior and leather lining (where you hand touches). The plastic exterior tends to melt into 10,000 black crumbs after a few years.

The Camadapter plates are well made (USA) but are generic (not fitted) so I'd pay a little extra for a fitted plate.

Well, the E-1 is on the way, but at a good price. Sorry to hear that it is a cheezy item.

Reading more about the Camadapter, I realize that I would not need their plate to put their hand strap on the 1D, so that makes it an affordable plan B. The Markins looks like the Ferrari of the bunch, maybe I will see if I can psych myself up to spend the $59.

Getting curious I am looking at my other cameras. My 5Dii has a RRS L-bracket and those thoughtful and clever people have provided it with a place to connect a strap of just the sort being discussed here, bless their hearts.

The Kirk enterprises L-bracket on my 20D lacks such a nice touch, but I am not itching to put a hand strap on it anyway, so the point is moot.

So another question arises. Once you have such a grip strap on a camera, do folks ever think about ways to hang the camera on themselves when not gripping it? Reading reviews on B/H I see one fellow talking about using the Camadapter strap in conjunction with something called a "Sun Sniper strap". Any comments on schemes like this would be appreciated!

I've a camdapter strap and plate for my 5D. Had it about 4 years and i have nothing negative to say about it. It's well made, comfortable, and looks like it will last a few more years still. Put simply, i would buy another one. That's about the highest recommendation i can give a product.

A standard or not so standard neck strap will attach to the top left lug on the camera and to the E-1 strap near the top right lug of the camera. i.e. they are not mutually exclusive accessories. If the lens is big enough then you should hand the lens from you and let the camera hang from the lens, so that there is less strain of the lens mount.
