I just recently purchased a nikon 50mm 1.8 lens for my D70 and don't like the rubber lens hood that nikon offers. Is there any other lens hood that would fit.
It seems like the nikon hn-3 screw in will fit the 52mm threading of my lens. Has anyone tried this or know about this.

what do u need a hood for? the front element is really far back

a hood is not only for protection of the front element from physical abuse but from stray light across the front element , this glancing light reduces contrast on the 85mm it is a big problem esp on the 1.4 some call it "veiling flare" and it does no good thing to your images
This is something I've often wondered about... How different is one hood from another? If the mounting and diameter are the same is any particular hood just as good as any other?

Basically if it will screw on it will work , as to the last question : yes , but with a caveat
sicne Nikon is 1.5 crop factor the hoods can be made even Longer for even more flare prevention and contrast enhancement by the same amount , generally hoods are too Shallow and feel free to experiment wit solutions to make them deeper

Kind of...
The hoods that are specifically made for a certain lens will probably work better. The reason is that a hood main function is to avoid light hitting the lens directly and generating flare. The problem is that if the hood is too long it will cause vignetting on the photo, and if it's too short it won't work as well as it should. A hood made specifically for your lens will take these into consideration and will get the best result without vignetting.
As John said, if it screws on and fits it will work, but some work much better than others...
Thanks for all the info guys. The hoya looks to be a great hood, so does the nikon hr-2 but they are rubber lens hoods. I personally prefer metal or plastic.

I have a Nikon HS-11 hood for my 50/1.8
Although it can be pricey new, you should be able to pick up a used one in good condition for a fairly reasonable price.
I like it because it's a metal hood, and it is a snap on, instead of screw on.
Cheers!
Ken
This is exactly what I was looking for. I just needed to make sure that other hoods (especially one made by nikon) would fit. Thanks for the info. Off to purchase my new HS-11 lens hood.

wait a minute, my nikkor 50mm 1.8 didnt' come with a hood... did i miss something?
Yeah same here geez I gots ripped off ..
There are probably many Nikon hoods that would be of use .
My Lens Catalogue says the HR-2 is the one but I made a nice one out of tin PVC and made it reversable and it just pops on the front . shields the front element well from stray light.

That's cool that you made one. I was thinking of doing the same thing because I wan't a fan of the rubber one nikon offers.
