From a tip (verified) from another forum, it turns out the the 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 DGX also works. I believe it has to be that exact version of the 300 and same for the non-Pro above other the AF either doesn't work well at all or they crash out the 5D3 (they have made so many varieties over the years it is possible a few others might work though). So the 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 DGX or the TelePlus MC4 1.4x DGX only it seems.
I don't know if the Pro 300 is any better or not yet.
I have the 1.4x teleplus pro 300 dg (no x). and pins covered or not, it stutters. interestingly, It autofocuses without the pins installed. if I am in the close proximity to focus zone, and there is good light, its decent. Not that great for tracking.
results are good actually. here an indoor test shot, hand held, 420, f8, iso 4000, 1/25 sec. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7288/9539800130_e0046e3a88_h.jpg

I just ordered the Kenko "Pro 300 DGX" to test it against the "MC4 DGX" on the EF 70-300L.
I will post the results in a couple days.
Is the Pro 300 DGX supposed to be a better TC than the other ? Not talking about how it works with the 70-300 here.

Not a Kenko TC, nor a 5D3, but the Canon 1.4x TC III works great on the 70-300L with a 1D Mk4.
Weird. Wish that were the case for the 5D3.
So far it seems like on the 5D3 and some Rebels the Kenko DGX versions (MC4 or 300 Pro) work and that the Canon and most to all other Kenko do not. Apparently on the 50D even the Kenko DGX fail to allow decent AF with the 70-300L (even those at least one of the Rebel models focuses fine with the DGX extenders).
And now it sounds like the 1D4 + Canon 1.4x TC III + 70-300L AFes fine even though the 5D3 AND 1DX do not in that combo (regardless of older firmware the latest f/8 firmware being used).
It's pretty weird since the why and how of it doesn't seem to make much sense.

What did you discover Fred? Does the Pro 300 DGX also work?

Matt
I can personally confirm it does. I haven't gotten around to testing whether the IQ is the same, better or worse than when using the DG yet. I'd be interested to see what Fred finds regarding that too (in case of copy variation).
I used the TC with my 5D MK III and it worked great with some lenses, and locked up the camera with my 100L. Since I bought it to use with my 100L, that was disappointing and I returned it.
Late4, I found that it will work if AFMA is turned off on the 5D MK III for that lens. Unfortunately, I use a +10 for my 100L, so no AFMA means poor AF accuracy.
I know it is an old thread but has anyone any experience with the Canon mount Kenko Pro 300 1.4x DGX and the Canon 40D. I will be using it with my 100-400 f 4.5 -f 5.6. Any AF and IQ thoughts. All opinions will be appreciated. Jim.
I use a 12mm Canon extension tube on the 70-300L all the time. Here's shot taken with the 7D and 70-300L using an extension tube. It even works with the Canon 1.4TC if you put the extension tube between the lens and the TC.
