p.1 #1 · Forum Time

As you all know, I am excited to share and have critiqued a large number of images from my trip of a lifetime to Tanzania.
At the same time, I am mindful of the rules of the forum (one new thread/d) and of the potential of having my images dominate recent and future postings.
So, general thoughts about forum usage?

And, at any time, please PM me if you feel my posts are excessive.

In the meantime, I continue to learn from all of your input, suggestions, reworks, tweaks and will try to offer the same. So thanks

Scott

Last weekend I believe we went more than a day wo a post.

Not like PC is overloading the server - go for it! There is ample opportunity for everyone inclined to post. Anyone with complaints could politely handle via PM which I am sure we'd all respect and honor.

Or, if you'd feel better, split posts (those non-critique oriented) with Nature & Wildlife?

Or, inquire what Fred thinks?

Unfortunately this forum seems really slow. Post all you want. I would like to see even more individuals posting on a daily basis. I guess the limited interest shows that most people really don't want C&C. I guess I should post of couple of my own.

Overload server ... ... have you looked in some of the other Forum Threads?

I think the issue is more about "playing nice with others" in the sandbox. Similar to the "Rule of Thirds" being a "rule" adhered to by those who haven't developed their own sense of composition, I'd suggest the rule of "one-a-day" is to be adhered to in the case that people haven't developed their own sense of how to "play nice". A quick check with Fred might not hurt, but I don't think too many folks here are going to be put off by a few extra pics/posts.

This group/forum has shown itself to be very adept at playing nice with everyone ... we'll politely let you know if you start stepping on anybody's toes in the sandbox. Besides, how else can we experience the challenges to photography that your trip reveals.

That being said ...

I'd suggest still keeping the picture count within a thread to the same one or two (or so) that we advise others ... just to allow a better focus on the image(s) being discussed. But, more threads than one a day ... go for it. Heck, a little "backlog" wouldn't hurt my feelings at all, as long as my practice/critique doesn't hurt yours. It's kind of a symbiotic thing @ "growth for both" ...

Bring on the pics.

P.S. BTW, the polite respect @ asking the group is not lost on the character of the OP, just another attribute of what makes the FM community and good FM'ers such an enjoyable experience to be part of.

I'm not really on this forum much, so take my comments for what it's worth. I've seen a few of your Tanzania pics and have enjoyed them. My main question to you is why do you limit yourself to one or two pictures per post? In the Weddings forum, people sometimes put up 80 pictures from one wedding in one post. And for what it's worth, I agree with the others. Post away.

The main limitation of frequent posts may be to run into audience availability limits. For example, I've got a virus, until I'm feeling better, I'm unlikely to comment much for a while, especially about images that require some thought and clear-headedness. PP tweaks, maybe. I can sort of do those on auto-pilot... I think.

What are the forum rules? Frequency of posting and number of images per post?

Regardless of the rules, I do think it makes sense to post only a few images at a time. This is a critique forum and critiques really work best of individual images or for small groups of related images. There does not seem to be much point in asking for a critique on a large number of different images.

Show and tell probably would be better on a different forum.

I think it isn't as much a case of "show & tell" ... but, I'm inclined to think that with the volume of images to process, sometimes we can become on "auto-pilot" with our routine processing, or our culling of images toward a "typical" comp.

For a more "volume oriented" perspective, I kinda like it when you put up couple of "compare" images. Those are usually short order @ A vs. B vs. C (small groups) ... I prefer "B" as being a pref toward working into something special. Those aren't usually warranting rework and micro-nits for PP per se, but opinion @ how you chose to approach the subject at perspective. Those kind seem to "hit me" real quick @ like, don't like or ho-hum.

Different levels of critique for different purposes.

Part of what I so like about this forum: good thoughtful, respectful dialogue.

Since beginning this thread I took a breather. Just too busy. But the support is welcome.
And it seems it may have encouraged others to cull through their work and post more. Hopefully those "lurking" in the background will jump in.

I wonder, worry sometimes if those less experienced are hesitant to post since the level of work and critique here is often very high. I hope not, since I have learned a ton here from my evolving humble beginnings. And the learning continues on.....and on......

+100 for me ... ain't that the truth.
+1 @ jump on in ... no matter where you are, either to pull from ... or to give to the community at large.

BTW, that reminds me @ "Iron Sharpens Iron" and I think that is what embodies this forum in a way that is rarely found or actually experienced. None of us are experts, per se, but we simply have a strong yearning for growth along with a helping spirit ... both toward giving and receiving.

For me ... my progression here has been "mind boggling" in certain regards ... looking back to where I started from, I didn't even know what layers were the first time I saw Karen talking about them. I can't even recall my first post here, but I certainly do retain a lot of things that I've learned from so many good FM contributors.

When Karen first mentioned layers ... it was total "greek" to me, but this forum has served as the catalyst for my continued growth. Not that everything I've learned came from here, but you guys certainly keep me on my toes and provide extra sets of eyes & minds to maybe let me see things I didn't see or think of on my own ... realizing the relationship between the capture and the processing (good, bad or simply different).

Agree or disagree with an image or processing or just about anything ... always good to bounce things off a group of people who provide honest feedback and opinion. When there is strong consensus, it can be powerful stuff, but even when there is much difference of opinion ... it just provides a lot to consider. Opinion is often times neither right, nor wrong ... but honest opinion and critique is something for consideration that one can "choose to use" or "choose to lose".

Personally, I've not found a better place (not really looking either) to have others respectfully tell me when they think I'm off the mark (good stuff), or to give me more ideas for next time (more good stuff). Kudo's to regular's, visitors (and lurkers) past, present and future for participating here.

If you've been lurking ... maybe 2013 is the time to jump in and tell us what you think or show us what you've got. It's not about being "right or wrong" ... it's about thinking about your image making so that you can take it where you want it to go ... wherever that may be.

Anyway, Scott and all others ... "Bring on the pics"
