The foot came off my 500/4L IS without too much bother. As long as you have a really good fit with the Allen key, you should be able to exert considerable force. OTOH, if it remains stubborn, maybe a drop of penetrating oil and a few hours wait could free it up.
I use the RRS foot, too. I was thinking about replacing it with a low profile 4th Generation Design foot, but after carrying it while wearing really heavy gloves this past winter, I figure I'll stick with the RRS. The gloves wouldn't fit under a lower profile foot.
