No luck on the rice after 24 hours. I'm going to give it another 24 hours. I tried using the blow dryer on it for a few minutes, too.
The 600 is functioning perfectly.
I plan to buy another 7D (used or refurb through CLP) to make sure I have one for vacation. We'll see what happens with the current 7D.
To top things off, I had about a thousand bucks of damage happen to my car today. In the long run, it's just money and everything else in life is great (including the 600 )!
Bad luck Ryan. My 7D failed completely a little over a month ago. Canon (Canada) flat rate repair was $250-ish.
Repair was reasonably quick and worth the money. They even replaced the rear screen and that was not part of the problem. Hope Canon has similar flat rate system for you. Good luck.
The guy from DigitalRev dried out his 7D in an oven after thawing out from a frozen tub of solid ice... The camera was full of water/ice........ When that didn't fully do the job, he lit it on fire.
FF to about 6:50 to see this.... actually, watch the whole video. Its pretty entertaining and amazing what these things can take.
Praise the baby Jesus, it works! I'm absolutely shocked; I was fully expecting to send it to Canon today. I took it out of the bag of rice today after it didn't work yesterday, and surprise surprise, it works! I'm pretty sure that the problem was in the shutter release button. As I said, it was acting as if the shutter release button was partially depressed. When I took the first few test shots, the button had to be pushed down a tad harder, and it was noticeable, but after 30 or so test shots, everything seems to be back to normal. To say I'm overjoyed would be a complete understatement!
That said, I would still rent one for the vacation... for $75 a week, you will sleep well. The bright side: If yours doesn't crap out during the vacation, you have 2 bodies to work with....
After the vacation, I would dump it on eBay and buy a refurb. With CLP and a little luck, you may be able to do this at net zero cost.
I this did about a year ago on a dropped 7D. There was nothing wrong with it, but I noticed I could sell it on eBay and get a refurb from Canon with 20% off for the same money. For free, I essentially reset my shutter count from about 40,000 to a couple dozen and eliminated the worry about future issues from the drop.
Good idea pKai. I may just do that. I have a 1Ds2 as well, so if my 7D craps out, I'll have a back up. I just generally find that I don't like shootings birds with it for all the expected reasons. Plus, I really like the 7D's spot focus feature.

Not trying to be the moral police or anything, as I'm just curious, but do you disclose to the ebayers that the camera has been submerged/dropped, even when it is working perfectly?
I'd never put on the grip and expect the 7D to be water resistant... the grip compromises the entire weather sealing of the body. Take the grip apart and you can see it's a lot of basic plastic and zero weather sealing, and there's nothing sealing the battery probe.
I've used my 7D in pretty horrible conditions (freezing rain in Antarctica) and it's been a champ. Did better than my 1D4.
Same goes for the 5D2's grip. Pretty poor performance from Canon for the money they charge.

Yes you are, but that's OK.....
I've never sold a submerged camera. As for the dropped one, I sent it to Canon for a CPS clean/check where it was given a clean bill of health. I then advertised it as a 40,000+ click professionally used camera with a recent CPS clean/check where it was given a clean bill of health. Photos of the camera clearly showed the scratches acquired during the dropping which was the only "damage" the camera had. If anyone asked how the scratches got there, I told them.
