p.1 #1 · Canon 5D shutter firing by itself !

Hey, folks.

before I send my 5D off to Canon for repair, I'm hoping that maybe there's some kind of self reset procedure I can try first.

The camera is suddenly firing (taking pics) all by itself. It just keeps on firing until I turn it off. Also, at times the top-controls get locked out. This happened after I tried to use it with very drained batteries, so I'm thinking that maybe I messed up the rom logic or something.

Has anyone had / fixed this problem before? Is there some secret reset procedure?

-Thanks.

Pretty common when the shutter assembly goes south. You could reset the PRAM as a last ditch effort--pull mains & clock battery.

Yeah, that's a common shutter failure symptom with Canon bodies.

Thanks.

When you say the "mains" do you mean the regular, big batteries?

My shutter count is pretty low.

Probably less than 13,000

Canon is notorious for early-failing shutters.

So wait:

The shutter fails, and then it fires repeatedly? If the shutter failed, wouldn't it just stop working?

How can this be a mechanical problem? It sounds like an electronic one.

A mechanical component in the shutter can fail, so that the shutter does not lock in the charged position. It then continuously repeats the futile cycle. For some reason many Canon bodies don't have a system to detect the failure and shut the camera down.
