I was asked to do a project with wireless flashes but I am not very immerse into this subject yet. Thus I am here to get some help from you guys.
Place I will be shooting is fare size hall with probably 3-4 flashes required to be installed. Lighting will be consistent during the presentation so I could use flashes in manual mode. At this time I have one SB600 so I will need to pick up few extra and some triggers.
I was looking around the net and many people are going with inexpensive youngnuo RF 602 triggers. Quick search on flebay and I can get 3 receivers and 1 transmitter for around 65.00. Any idea if they are any good from personal expertise
Assuming I will go with those triggers I will need extra flashes. Now this is tough. All I need them to do is fire - they will be in manual mode 99% of the time. I need to find reasonably good powered flash for reasonably low cost - does this even possible ? I will rig them with some DIY softboxes I learned to make during my macro time
Any help would be greatly appreciated in this matter.
Keep in mind this is a little project - limited budget or around 300.00 + / - few !!!
For a decent sized hall and flashes mounted on the sides/corners, a softbox may be stealing too much power and not softening as much as you'd want depending on the distance.
If you're really looking to save money, you can put 3 of the 4 flashes in the optical slave mode assuming the little window on the flash is visible to the rest of the room. They trigger when they see the light of another flash (if guests use a flash camera, who knows though).
unfortunately slave mode will not help me. I need to place two in front of curtain and two behind. I will get slave mode of front but there is no way to redirect light to back of curtains.
Could I possibly combine slave and wireless trigger together ?
Also any ideas on supplementary flashes - should I get youngnuo brands to go along or maybe something else available. Not even sure what else exists in the market but nikon brand
I do this with multiple flashes all the time. Slave and wireless will work together. Any old flash will work particularly if you are going to fire them in manual. I fire an SB800, SB80, SB24, and a truly ancient but functional Vivitar 283. Don't use the Vivitar as on camera flash, it'll fry the PC circuit. I use a combination of Pocket Wizards and the built in triggers. It works great. It takes time to dial in the light this way but once I get it where I want I can fire away all day.
I just posted a thread about transceivers for the D4. Photixx (Strato II and Oldin) and PWs were recommended. I've heard good things about Youngnuo triggers, considering the price. You have a problem, however, with the location of the flashes. Changing out or fixing a malfunctioning trigger can be a problem if its mount up high.
grab a set of Yongnuo RF602's on ebay with 4 receivers. $50 bucks and you can fire them all. Search youtube for reviews - they work and for the money are hard to beat.
I use old Canon EX540z and even SB-16a from my F3HP (with off camera cord to SYongnuo receiver). Never had a misfire, and get sync up to 1/200s on D600
I recently bought a set of Cactus V5 triggers and I like them. Each unit can work as either a transmitter or receiver. Price is only about $60-70 for a pair.
thank you very much for info
Now just have to find some old flashes

I will look into that topic - thank you
Changing trigger will not be a problem because flash will be on stands, elevated a little but I can get to them at any time.

great info mate - I was looking at some old and very used SB 28 and maybe getting some super oldie general flashes as well. Ebay got few going right now.

Anyone remember Strobist? I put together a massive Strobist set for architectural photography just to have a lightweight alternative. Used Nikon SB24/25/26 speedlights will outlast any of the new Chinese flashes sold today. The SB24's are powerful and well under $100 in good condition. Add an inexpensive set of ebay triggers and whatever modifiers you have and you should be good to go.
