p.1 #1 · Black & White in sports photography ? Why not

I think my love for B&W will never die, it was a big step for me to go from film to digital 2 1/2 years ago and an even bigger one to start doing sports shooting. From time to time i'll make a shot B&W to get it to better convey the mood, willingly trading form and composition over action. What about you, do you think B&W is at all suited for action shooting ? C&C welcome as your thoughts on the subject.

For my personal taste... it really works with the portrait style shots you have presented like 5-7. Not so much so in shots 1-4.

I agree with Paul 100%. I use a lot of black and white action shots when shooting grittier sports like MMA and boxing.

I love B&W - classy and timeless.

IMHO, I think there is a place for B&W, but color is an important part of sports.

The non-action shoots look great in B&W.

I agree with what has been said here. I will use B&W shots for non-action shots. Players deep in thought, unhappy or angry to intensify that mood. Or to high light grit and intensity. The taped hand holding a helmet, the shot in tight right down the line of scrimmage prior to the snap, etc.

Very interesting to read you all, i think i feel exactly the same way about B&W. But i will add (and admit) i sometimes roll back to B&W simply because the color rendition is for some reason unusable. For instance the park where the first 4 shots were taken has been surrounded by bright yellow construction trucks all around since last november. They are building many housing complexes all around making it virtually impossible not to see some of the construction equipment and/or debris in the shots. Some other times when shooting under dim city park light that color overcast is impossible to filter out (sodium vapor lights for instance) and then B&W will save my butt.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment, much appreciated :-)

By the way feel free to add some of your B&W shots as examples of your use of B&W in sports (well if it's technically possible and permitted here)

Wow ! i love those shot, the first one is somewhat reminiscent of some powder portraits i've seen done lately by Aleander Heinrichs a German photographer i really like.

The close up of the eyes speaks volumes, Bravo !

I would be against B&W for every image. I personally don't like it much for sports. I only use it if there are some really blown out spots on white jerseys. But it was used back then so now it could do the same.

I totally respect your view gome1122 but as you point out yourself it was the only thing they had in the good ol days and it worked then so...

I don't think there are a lot of fans of it here, but I know some people like the photos with B&W and one color for pop. Maybe it was over done in the past, and I just missed that phase. I know my wife loves those type of pictures.

Hello jspyteck, i know exactly what you mean it was probably over utilized at one point. But when you start digital you just got to try it, but i was sort of shy to show them at anyone in the forums i attend feeling a lot of folks found that tacky. But after 2 1/2 years experimenting with digital now (not a lot i know but you have to start someday right) i have come to a point where i trust my own judgment. If i feel like the shot gains something with the technique i simply do it and tell myself those who don't like it just don't have to look at them, nobody is forcing them. I also believe if it is well done, with taste it remains in many case something worth doing. Besides i have folks asking for this end result among my customers. Once it was for a wedding shot i had first processed in plain back n white and more recently the 2nd time for an action football shot, actualy for the mother of the female football player on picture # 7 on my post. She wanted to see only the orange shoe laces in color in the shot. Like they say: " The customer is always right" :-)
