p.1 #2 · How good TC20III with 300 F2.8 VRII wide open? Please post,Thanks
Sorry I don't have any samples anymore, but I briefly tried this combo (300VRII with TC 20III), and felt it gave my 500/4VR a run for it's money. Even wide open at f/5.6, it was very close in sharpness to my 500/4 (at f/4 or f/5.6), and of course much smaller and easier to handle. Sharpness degrades quite a bit towards the edges/corners, but this should not be an issue for wildlife etc. In the end I kept just my 500/4, well since I already had it, and it's still slightly better and has some more subject isolation at 500mm and f/4 or 700mm and f/5.6. But if you need such long lens only occasionally but have many other uses for a 300/2.8, then this is a very good option.

I was happy with the results - Here is a link to some shots with the combo 300mm 2.8 VR I & TC 20 III
Thanks you!

This is a killer combo (300/2.8VRII + TC20EIII). These are from the last couple of days and ALL shot wide open (though I do notice some compression damage/loss of detail in reducing these for the web). The last isn't a great shot by any stretch of the imagination .. but is a very heavy crop from a bird at over 100m distant and is great for getting a record shot or for IDing a bird.
The birds in #2 & #4 are benefitting from the setting sun to give them that golden glow !
Distances as best I can remember ; #1 & 3 about 15m, #2 about 10m, #4 about 20m and #5 100m+
Note that although these have been through LR5 I am not the world's best at PP and I'm sure many could do a much better job of sharpening etc.

Those look pretty good frog! Have you compared the 300 + 2x to the sigma 120-300 + sigma 2X? I had both combos for a short time and I felt the sigma IQ was 95%+ of the Nikkor. The AF speed just wasn't there on the sigma. I'm interested to see how the new 120-300 fares with 2X vs the Nikkor superteles from an AF standpoint.

Thanks mate. I plan to do some testing with the 300+2 against the 120-300 +2 and 500/4.5, it will be interesting. However I've not had the time (or the weather conditions when I've had the time) yet.
