is it me or the d4 white balance a pain to work with. for me, the d3s is so much better. it seems 4 out of 5 shots with the d4 has to be color corrected. meaning auto color doesn't fix the yellow issue. i shoot auto racing jpegs only. no time for raw. i've been tweaking the white balance color settings. still, the d3s was consistently better overall. with the d4 i have to add additional steps in post processing. more time consuming. my opinion the d4 is a step in the wrong direction. anybody else seeing this? i'm not trying to be harsh towards nikon. i think nikon's engineering department fell asleep with the d2 series and bounced back with the d3 series. with the d4 i feel we are heading back towards the d2 era. at this point i wish i would have kept the d3s. thoughts?
I've been happy with my D4 and it's color. There is definitely a color difference between the D3s (I also have one of those and regularly shoot with it too) and the D4. So I got the Color Checker PassPort target and software and created a dual illuminate profile for each camera. This brought the color balance of the two cameras to near perfect match between them.
I think the D4's white balance is usually better. Be sure you have the latest firmware too. The last one really effected the WB.
The colors are different though. I like the green's better in my D3S. I've got a color checker too, and those things drive me nuts. I can make a profile that is "true to life" according to the color checker, but it just don't look as good as the tweaked camera standard profiles. I've also noticed when making a color checker profile it looks so much like adobe's standard profile.
The only color issue I find is shooting in a yellow room. I find yellow is more disruptive to the D4 WB than to the D3s. If I see yellow, I'm shooting some test shots of my passport. Don't know why, maybe I'm losing it.
The d4 is much better at auto white balance than the D3S. When I owned the D3S I always found myself adjusting the white balance using the kelvin selection. With the D4 I can keep it in auto without worries.

i believe this is what i'm seeing. yellow is a little stronger at times.
that and a new laptop that the colors are a little off.
i need somehow to calibrate my laptop. i think the d4 is fine. images are better on the desktop machine
I have both and must say that the D4 nails the WB better then my D3s....both need a little tweak on the color graph...but the D3s has that yellow I find hard to calibrate out.....
I had similar experience with D4, returned to D3s and was happy since.
Friend of mine has D4 and his WB just perfect, I guess it was something wrong with my particular D4
I don't have a D3s, but I do own a D3 and D4. My D3 WB was worlds better than my D4's WB until the last firmware update for the D4. That literally fixed all the WB issues I was having. Color-wise, I prefer the D4 over the D3, but just by a touch.
