p.1 #1 · Monitor recommendations

I just ordered a new pc and am wondering if anyone has any advice on monitors. Im seeing a lot of the new ones are LED and I was wondering if anyone had experience with these? They all have similar stats but I know some are better than others at actually giving you accurate representations.
Thanks

hmm with only 2-300 to spend i don't have much to recommend.. you would be fine with any dell/hp/viewsonic IPS display. probably in the range of 21" to 24". if you can up your budget to ~$600 you will have a much nicer display.

If you can stretch your budget some more I've heard very good things about these and from what I understand they are the exact same IPS panels used in the Apple 27" monitors except for over $500 less:

Honestly, you cannot beat the Dells for price. I'd say to stay away from LEDs though.

Yeah I wasnt sure about them. They are new but I saw one at a costco that was very dark and contrasty. Figured I might be better to play it safe and get an lcd

To get any kind of accurate/consistent color reproduction, your budget is going to be a real problem. TN or TFT type displays aren't terribly good at either, and that's all you'll get with your budget that low.

What is wrong with LED? Most of the nice IPS displays seem to be LED, not LCD or other.

I would definitely suggest saving some more money first. You also have budget for good calibration hardware and software on top of this right?

tftcentral.co.uk is probably the best review site.

LED is LCD. They are all LCD's. LED is just a type of light source for an LCD display. You can choose between fluorescent backlit or LED backlit.

Yes, and LED generally uses less energy and has a slimmer panel than fluorescent, so I'm not sure why anyone would avoid LED except to save money short term?

Unless it's backlighting a quality panel and in a quality cabinet, the LED backlit LCD's can suffer from a number of issues; if it's in a nice Dell like the U3014, then it can easily surpass the quality of the CCFL backlit panels.

These guys do a great job of reviewing monitors. Your best bet is to look up various IPS panels that fall within your budget range and see what's said about them with respect to panel uniformity and AdobeRGB coverage. When you find one that looks good, check reviews at other sites, and ask about it here again in a specific thread.

Another vote for Dell Ultrasharp 24".
Really awesome monitor, and it becomes even better when you see the price.

The biggest issue for me is that most LED based monitors are severely limited in gamut range; not to mention accuracy in contrast is often wacky. The LED's I've worked on that others own have often suffered from considerable tint issues when not viewed directly head on. That can be pretty major with a monitor at or over 24". I would expect any "budget" LED to exhibit the same issues in all these areas.

Regardless of which road you take, IPS should be a given. I'm sure there are plenty of places on the web where you can read about the differences in today's monitors. Your budget is definitely playing a major role here. I'd suggest (like others) that you bump that up a couple of hundred bucks at minimum. Dell Ultrasharps are about the best you can get in this price range.

I went with an NEC myself this past fall, and love it; but I will likely not spend the extra money next time, and instead go back to Dell. It was an improvement, but not large enough of one that it justified the additional money. Mainly, I got size, wide gamut and calibration all in one package. Not that bad of a deal, but I've yet to see that it was an "upgrade" to the previous Dell monitors I've owned.

I'm also looking for a monitor and am looking in that price range or maybe a little more. It seems like the Dell 2412M is a decent choice for the the price range unless you go the Korean monitor route. If you can spend more than the 2410 seems like a good choice.

That's not too bad of a price for what you're getting. Either way, wide-gamut, at least for our line of work, is way way over rated.
