I'll take light rain any day over a bright, mid-day sun, and in fact shot youth lacrosse yesterday in the drizzle.
I love my 400 as well and it's the original non-IS version of the lens. I will have the IS Mk I by the coming weekend though, so I'm waiting to see what difference there will be between the two.
Andy, that 400 is dreamy! I use a 300 2.8 on a 1.3 cropper that gets me the same focal length, but not quite the same bokeh. It's a great fixed length for sideline shooting and, of course, in the right hands (see photos above) can be magical ...
