I don't understand the backlit/flare thing with bad color balance. To me, that's bad lighting and a destroyed photo. But I know it's just me - apparently everyone else will love it.

You don't have to love it
Its all subjective. I think the lighting makes the image more dynamic. I feel like it would have fallen flat without the unique touch of that warmth.
I don't agree with the others. The composition of this one could be improved a lot.
The proportion of model to other things in the frame is my main complaint. We see a large roof overhang - larger than the space allotted to the model. And the bench he is sitting one is also large. Both of these large objects add nothing to the frame.
The second complain is the bright patch of sky. It distracts from the people in the frame.
It is difficult to see the model's face clearly because of blurring or haze.
I really love how the image turned out. I feel like the dramatic lighting contributed to the urban feel they were going for. I understand not everyone agrees with that sentiment, and I totally accept that. I still appreciate the critiques
My first instinct would have been to delete this image, but then it started to grow on me a little (but not a lot) because it's so different. Did the couple like it?
Like the delivery dock metaphor! As others have said, my personal preference would be to get much closer and get both father and mother's smiles in the photo.
