p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What to do???

I'm having trouble deciding...whether to buy a 6D w/24-105 kit $2399, or buy a 24-70 2.8 mkii. If I buy the 24-70 ii, i'll have to keep and use the 60D. My current gear consists of 60D, Sigma 12-24, 50 1.8, and 70-200 f4. I'm a hobbyist, generally take pics of my little girl and travel. Once in a while, I take pics of engagements, weddings and parties, non paid as a (tag along) second shooter.
Btw, I own a 24-70 2.8 mki, but selling today, because I am so disappointed by the performance of such a $$$ lens. Also to fund my next purchases.
Thanks in advance for your opnions.

6D with the 24-105, you will love it! You will find that much more useful than the 60D with a 24-70 for the photo's you shoot. Put the 70-200 on the 60D and 24-105 on the 6D and most anything you want is convered.

I just added the 6D to pair with my 7D and really enjoy it. I have the 24-70 series I on my 6D and find the image quality to be excellent, sorry you weren't happy with yours.

Unless you have a defective 24-70 mk1, if you are unhappy with its performance ("of such a $$$ lens"), you won't be very happy with the 24-105 or even the 24-70 mk2. The mk2 is better but not by a huge leap and it is expensive.

6D.

See if you can get one without the kit lens because the 24-70 has you covered.

Full frame is a whole new ballgame - especially with the Sig 12-24.

I'd rather have a 6D/24-105L over a 6D/24-70II. The 24-70 is too heavy for travel and walkaround, plus too heavy and no IS. If you need a fast aperture lens for portraits, buy a 85 1.8 USM later.

The 24-70 II is wasted on the 60D, so that's out.

Too bad about your 24-70. The new 24-70 II is awesome, but I have an excellent copy of the version I, so no rush to upgrade there.

For an all-around lens, I prefer the 24-105 over the original 24-70. That said, the 24-105 is a recent addition and I've used the bulletproof 24-70 for a ton or event photography and it's always been great.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with a 6D and 24-105 lens combo.

The 24-70 mkI is not an impressive lens wide open at the wide end. Or, I should say, neither of mine were.

Another vote for the 6D + 24-105.

thanks for all the comments. i don't think mine is defective, but just not as impressive as expected...for the price. i can still get decent money for it, cause it's only 1.5 years old. i might be able to scape together a bit more and purchase an 85 1.8 as well as the 6d/24-105 kit. that way i have a low light, portrait lens covered as well.

You might check prices before you buy the kit, as of late I can't find it at $2399, seems all the major retailers are back up to $2599. The original 24-70L just seems to heavy; as I imagine the MkII would be, for the 6D and neither has IS.

The 6D 24-105 kit seems like a great pairing, the newer 24-70 f4L IS might be an option as well. When funds permit, the price lowers a bit I'm looking to put a 6D kit in my Dmoke F2. Combining the 24-105 with the 17-40, 70-200 f4L IS will complete my f4 zoom trinity and make for some 'Happy Shooting'...

When low light or nice Bokeh are required I prefer the much lighter/faster/less expensive primes like the 28f1.8, 50f1.4 or 85f1.8. Other then the 100 f2.8 macro, I've not needed f2.8 in a prime or zoom; nor has my budget. I'm not a pro and don't mind changing out glass when needed. If I shot indoors or events that might change tho...

The 6D w/24-105 kit gets my vote as well

I live in Canada, and there are a couple of stores running this price until the end of the month. It might be Canon rebate incentive, i'm not sure. I just hope the stores still have them in stock.

Go get that kit and enjoy...now
I'm sure there will be summer, back to school and holiday sales...if you can wait, maybe even refurbished bodies by end of year! Budget has me waiting a bit, but I'll bag one sooner or later

Any opinions on...5d3 w/85f1.8 vs 6D w/24-105f4. I have the option of having one combo. With the 5d3, I can only have one lens

Well do you need the af of the 5diii? If not the 6d is by and large the same camera plus it has wifi and GPS and costs less. I don't really think the af is worth the price difference IMHO. For the record I own a 5diii, the 6d had not been released when I purchased. Had it I probably would have been totally satisfied with the 6d and spent the price difference on a nice lens or two. If you are set on the need for the 24-70 range and want 2.8 take a hard look at the new tamron. I bought one because it was better than every copy of the canon 24-70i I've ever owned and the canon 24-70ii was really good, but not twice as good to justify the price.

Would you be happy with the 5D3 and the lenses you currently have?
I was in the same boat a few weeks ago, could have purchased the 5D3 only, but I was too heavy with APS-C lenses that would not work. I got the 6D kit with the 24-105 and am quite pleased. Now I am trying to sell the last couple APS-C lenses so that I can finish out my kit.
If you would be happy with the lenses you have, by all means get the 5D3. If you will be happy with the 24-70 MkII on your 60D, it will be hard to argue that choice, but I think the way to go is the 6D combo, I do not think you will be disappointed.

I really wasn't bowled over by the 24-70mm mk I on my 7D but when I got a full frame it suddenly came into its own. It's wasted on a crop camera but excels on FF. Given a straight choice between the 2 options you gave I would got with the 6D every time.

Af is one of the main reasons for even looking at the 5d3. I can't imagine buying the 6d and realizing I should have bought the 5d3. I really disliked my 24-70 2.8 i, that's why I sold it.

Reading what you like to shoot in the first post, there's no reason why the 6D wouldn't be a great camera for you, imo. I used to use the 5D2 for sports, it's not as if anything less than 1Dx/5D3 AF is garbage. However, I don't know the way in which you valuate your finances. If you can easily and comfortably afford the better model, why not? Maybe you will save yourself an upgrade step a year down the road and become more intimate with the camera than you would have otherwise. Nice thing about most cameras is that when you buy the better model, you don't necessarily buy the inherent complexity in ownership, like you find with many other devices/tools.

I have the 5D3 with 24-105, 16-35L and 85 1.8 USM, I find it to be a great kit.

I find the 24-105 is beautiful for most shots, even used it at 105 the other day for some landscapes that I just couldn't get closer to.

The 85 1.8 USM is beautiful on the 5D3, but as others have said, if you can save cash and get the 6D, you might find it does the job you need.

In all honesty, if you have the time, and some spare cash, rent a 6D and a 5D3 with the 24-105 and test them each for a day, whichever yields better results (for you) buy that combo.

well, buying the 5d3 will be really stretching the budget. but after an afternoon out at the zoo with my toddler, nieces and nephews, i think i'm leaning towards the 5d3. 8/10 keepers when they stood long enough to pose, 3 or 4 out of 10 when there were running towards me or running by. which leads me to believe i need the af on the 5d3. i dont' want to blame the equipment i have, so if i get the 5d3, i'll have nothing to blame but myself if the pictures are oof.
