p.1 #1 · D800 shoots the Milky Way from Ft. Davis, Tx
Hello all. I recently returned from the Texas star party in far west Texas in the town of Fort Davis. The first three nights were the best and the rest of the week was bad, cloudy rainy etc. I took these on Tuesday night (most transparent of the week) and I used my Nikon D800 with the 200mm f/2.8G and 35mm F/1.4G on the AstroTrac. ISO was 400 & 1600 for 6~8 minutes. All images processed with Nikon Capture NX2. My D800 is unmodified. I had a great time and have many more photos to process. Enjoy...

I really enjoyed these pictures. I gave up stargazing a few years ago when the 8 inch Celestron and tripod got too heavy to bother with.
I understand that, I just sold my 20-inch Dob because I didn't use it much plus I just got bored with looking at the same objects over and over again. With the money from the telescope, I upgraded my camera gear and now I photograph the night sky. I have plenty of friends with telescopes so I can always go look whenever I feel the need to do so. I'm sure you're in the same situation, you may have plenty of friends to share with. Otherwise you might be able to get yourself a small Dob that is easy to manage. Looking at the night sky with binoculars or a telescope or just standing there with the naked eye is very enjoyable. I wouldn't totally give it up.
