A boy in the Masai Village I visited.
Four images of hyenas:
At the den
At a lion kill of a cape buffalo.
Too bad I can't include the screeching sounds of the hyenas and the even louder vultures.
Thanks Brian and Khai.
Watching and listening to the hyenas and vultures WAS exciting- even though the scene was gory.
I don't like gore- but in the wilds of East Africa, it is a reality.

Thanks Chris, Tril, Birdie, KenMunroe and Lil.
Hyenas have been given a bad rap through the years.
True- they are scavengers (like many other species), but they are also hunters.
And if they catch a lone lioness they might kill it- so they are not cowards.
I saw a fantastic clip on TV that showed a pack of hyenas harassing some lionesses, and along came the lion king to the rescue. He singled out the hyena leader (they are matriarchal) and chased her for several hundred yards. When he caught the hyena he practically ripped her head off.
Hmmm- I guess that's partly why males are so big- they are protectors of the pride.
