p.1 #1 · Looking for the best Non-Nikon shutter release..

I am exploring purchasing a NON-Nikon brand shutter release and wondered if any of you have discovered a gem of a remote? Does it exists? or am I better off buying Nikon product for my D700. Thanks in advance.

Looking closer now I wish I had posted this in general gear... :/

wired or wireless?

and no unlike many you are looking for a product that is for a Nikon specific application. so you would use the Nikon area.
this is unlike others that use the general gear category for single camera make/model specific threads.

hahaha I was literally scratching my head..

sjms, I am open to either but, I believe I am leaning toward wireless.

I called my local camera shops and got some poor responses and regrettably a lot of out of stock inquiries on the Nikon shutter releases. I looked at a few on Amazon during my lunch break, it is a place i like to read reviews, with a grain of salt of course. But it helps me to get a gauge on the products and their features.

RFN-4s Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon DSLR with MC30 Type connection was one I'm considering.

B&H has the Vello line of wired and wireless releases. I was just there today and got a 10 pin model for my D4. cost $8.00. it simply works. and at that price shedding a tear about its loss/breakage isn't an option.

wireless: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749293-REG/Vello_RCW_N1_Wireless_ShutterBoss_Timer_Remote.html

they are pretty much the same in that price range. you can get "out there". its all about your uses.

IMO, the best wireless remote for the D700 (and other Nikon bodies with the 10-pin connector) is the RFN-4s.

Most wireless remotes sit in the flash shoe and have a cable to the 10-pin connector. The RFN-4s is small and plugs directly into the connector. It is tucked out of the way next to the lens. I leave it on my D800E most of the time.

Robin- TY for the input.
Yes I have had this exact unit in my shopping cart all day wondering about it. It is a contender.

My only concern is that I will be installing and removing the module often from the body. Some of the reviews I read were commenting on the tight space and removing and installing issues.
My primary purpose for the release is for when I get invited to shoot landscapes in the evening and early morning.

I like my Hahnel Giga Pro because it's programmable for time-lapse/startrails
Had vI which unfortunately did not have a lock for the buttons (got squashed in the bag, accidentally depressed and switched on throughout an 18-hour intercontinental flight, ended up with a flat battery). Have read the vII does though.

I have the Nikon wired remote and a few other generic ones (wired and wireless), as well as the RFN-4. I hardly use the others anymore. I keep a wired one only as a spare in my bag.

The RFN-4 is a nicely designed unit and I find it easier to attach and remove than any of the other remotes. It is a bit tight but it grabs the threads easier. Just keep in mind you don't need to torque these things down. Light finger pressure is plenty.

If you do get the RFN-4 get a lanyard to keep the transmitter handy around your neck when shooting. Like everyone else I know who bought one I tend to keep it on the camera most of the time. It's tucked in out of the way and you don't really notice it that much.

the main disadvantage of a wireless remote is: the batteries are empty when you really need them.

The threaded wheel on the RFN-4s is larger than the standard Nikon version so it is easier to unscrew from the 10-pin connector. I have to remove it and reinstall it whenever I use the Nikon PB-4 bellows, or when I use a GPS unit. It is not a problem.

I've been really liking this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MC-36R-Wireless-Timer-Remote-NIKON-D700-D300S-D300-D3X-/370528911396?ssPageName=ADME:LC:US:3160

It can be used as a simple wired or remote and has the timer, counter, etc. It's nice on a cold day to keep your hands in your coat pocket and be able to take the image.

It's construction is not super, but it's not bad by any means and it's survived a year with me where other remotes have died . . .

Several super cheap options: I am using a wireless one (Yongnuo)and a wired one I got for free with a GPS receiver (Opteka):

I've been very happy with that model, hasn't given me any problems in the 6 months or so that I've had it.

I am using the RFN-4s and I highly recommend it. Compact, easy to use, reliable.

FWIW I have an extremely cheap wireless remote for my D700 that just works. I've never missed a shot and it has a nice LED that confirms focus if you need it.
