p.1 #1 · Copying CF card from one camera to SD card in another camera

For those occasions that I don't want to take a laptop to backup or transfer/empty my CF cards, I am considering using a high capacity (and relatively cheap) SD card in my 5D3 as an offload point. I know this probably shouldn't be done as a matter of routine, but I was wondering if there are any reasons why it would be unadvisable take a full CF card from one camera (say, 7D or 1Dx) and insert it into my 5D3 and then copy those images over to an SD card in the 5D3.

The most obvious issue, to me, is the possibility for some type of data corruption due to one camera reading a card that was formatted in another. Although, I'm not even sure that is a valid concern.

I would appreciate any input from informed individuals . Oh, and I'm sure that someone will be quick to suggest that I just buy more CF cards, but I would rather not go down that road.

There should not be any data corruption - the same file system is used for both cameras.

However, it may simply not work. I don't shoot Canon, but when I insert a card into one Nikon camera from another one, it doesn't recognize it as having any images on the card. I checked this when I was thinking about being able to back up my girlfriend's camera images onto a secondary SD card in my D7100 (as I will be doing with my own images) - but alas, it states that there is nothing it can back up.

So... just suggesting you may want to check and make sure another camera's CF card will actually show up as having copy-able images on your 5D.

I frankly wouldn't trust 128gb of data on one card as my only copy of that data. But that's up to you

Thanks for the reply. Before posting the question, I did check to make sure that the files from my other camera would be readable on the 5D3. I was able to copy them to the SD card and then later view them on my computer.

Good to know that file systems would be the same- I just wasn't sure if formatting in camera left some type of marker that would create problems if the card was accessed in another camera.

As far as trusting all the images to one card, I agree and have enough CF cards that I won't be forced to reuse any, so the SD would be the backup.

Thanks again!

I have done what you are trying to do here, when I was travelling and needed backup. But I have only done the copying with the the same body as I was shooting the pics with.
But I would belive it will work good even if using another Canon body than the pics where shot with.
